Forums such as the Future Investment Initiative may not solve to world's problems and they likely don't offer financing solutions to solve global challenges. But what they do exceedingly well is to offer a platform to network and create coalitions of the willing which do address international issues. Case in point, I had the pleasure of meeting with the team from The Global Institute for Disease Elimination (GLIDE). They are at FII Institute VII to raise awareness and funds to further their important work in the elimination of infectious diseases around the world. Let's hope that GLIDE and other organizations like them are given centre stage and a larger voice at gatherings like FII and World Economic Forum

Perception is reality in an era of digital media. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the messaging around the terrible tragedy unfolding before our eyes in Israel and Gaza. One reality that was on everyone's lips was that a new Middle East was emerging - a Middle East that is doing away with conflict and becoming a centre of soft power and prosperity. All it took was one fateful Saturday of horror and the terrible aftermath to shatter the perception. So was it an illusion? Has the geopolitical moment for the Middle East come and gone? Some will say that economic prosperity and progress is here to stay. Others will argue that until the political issues between the Palestinians and Israelis are resolved, the Middle East will never truly matter or prosper in any real way. What the tragedy in Gaza has revealed is that anyone who thought you could simply sweep the Palestinian cause under a rug may be mistaken. The geopolitical ramifications on business and those seeking to do business in the Middle East is still unknown, but what we do know is that a "new Middle East" may not be as fully formed as we thought it was. A lot of people ask me how climate change has an impact on wellbeing. Does it cause stress and mental anguish? The short answer is yes. But if we unpack wellbeing into its core building blocks, one can quickly see how climate change can have an immediate and deleterious impact on wellbeing. Gallup and the OECD brake down wellbeing into socio-economic factors including: 1) access to education 2) life expectancy/proper health care access 3) a good job/economic prosperity 4) social connections and a network to seek help in hard times 5) trust in governance 6) the built environment. Overlaying super climate events like severe drought, rising temperatures, flooding, and pandemics and their impact on communities, it becomes plain to see how they affect the afore mentioned building blocks to wellbeing.
