The work that Disability Leadership Institute member Simon Darcy is doing is at the forefront of change in #disability employment, including understanding the nature of self employment. Thanks for sharing these valuable case studies Simon. Disability #Leadership in action.
Professor at UTS Business School - UTS Disability Research Network - Mentor - Co-Designing Transformative Solutions
People with disability are 43% more likely to be self-employed or run their own business than the general public. Yet, mainstream business start-up programs rarely provide inclusions for people with disability running their own business or entrepreneurs with disability seeking inclusion in mainstream accelerator or incubator programs. Exceptions include SSI's #IgniteAbility that focuses on one-to-one start-up support for people with disability and Remarkable Tech that supports disability tech start-ups that may have founders with disability. While self-employment and entrepreneurial start-ups are important some people with disability, most still look for mainstream employment. However, the employment rates of people with disability have not changed for the last 20 years. Research on employees with disability has consistently found that this is often related to having a terrible time working for an employer. They may have trouble finding a job, or they may get a job but receive no support or development for their career and skills. Business has a key role in tackling this issue because we need large-scale employment to create significant change the Australian labour force participation statistics. For example, the NSW Government has announced that they aim to hire 10,000 more people with disability in the next three years. One of the most rewarding projects I've worked on is the IncludeAbility, which is led by the Australian Human Rights Commission. This project works with 17 of the biggest employers in the country. We’ve already seen some trial programs take place and groups of people being hired by companies like Woolworths, where they can rethink how people join, not only at the entry-level, but also higher up in the organisation. This is just one aspect of the work we’re doing at UTS Business School and as part of the UTS Disability Research Network. Work that has influenced the NDIS and NSW Inclusion Act, supported disability entrepreneurship in Australia or is fighting to make tourism across the country accessible to everyone. If you’re interested, you can explore some of our case studies on our website - https://lnkd.in/gYHuGt3Z Are you an employer looking to employ people with disability or a researcher in this area? I’d love to hear from you in the comments.

“Change is often uncomfortable, and allowing disabled people into the rooms of power and decision making seems particularly discomfiting.
