  • Farming isn't just about crops and machinery - it's also about looking out for each other. This National Farm Safety Week (14-20 July), Farmsafe Australia's ‘In Safe Hands’ campaign recognises the importance of our farmers, farming families and the entire agricultural industry. The campaign follows Victorian dryland broadacre farmer and well-known industry advocate David 'DJ' Jochinke, President of the National Farmers' Federation, as he discusses the importance of prioritising more than just the physical health of his workers and his community. “Tragically we’ve had three deaths happen on farm just within our neighbouring district, and I guess it’s made us more acutely aware of not only how precious and how quickly things can happen, but also what we should be doing about having those conversations and making sure that we are doing (farm work) as safely as possible,” says DJ. “There is never a situation where you should feel pressured and be rushing beyond your abilities or beyond the machinery’s abilities is really critical to remember. At the end of the day, looking after yourself is the most important thing.” To find out more about the resources available and how we can work together to create rural communities where everyone feels safe and supported, visit www.farmsafe.org.au

  • We're pleased to see a $47.1M boost to Australia's biosecurity thanks to sustainable funding reforms. We've long called for cost recovery from importers over burdensome levies. Now it's time to withdraw the failed levy legislation and return the focus on strengthening our biosecurity system. Learn more:

  • Basin communities, farmers and businesses are bracing for the worst as this week the Federal Government opens its chequebook for buybacks. Our Water Committee Chair Malcolm Holm, who farms in the Basin, says all Australians should be worried and there are better ways to improve river health. “The Murray-Darling Basin is essential to feeding Australia, producing 40% of our food and fibre. It’s basic economics. Higher water costs will drive up the cost of food at a time when the cost of living is hurting Australian families.” Read more: https://buff.ly/3LpGFFB

  • NAIDOC WEEK ❤️💛🖤 ABORIGINAL SEA COMPANY The Aboriginal Sea Company (ASC) gives Indigenous people and Traditional Owners an opportunity to advance themselves, become owners and operators in their own right and be in charge of their own destinies. Not only does the ASC provide more jobs within its community, it is also providing a sustainable economic future for First Nations People. For example, the ASC owns 11 commercial mud crab licenses, expanding its reach in sustainable seafood. With the acquisition of Bevwoods Crabbing, they’re catching, processing and shipping the finest mud crabs throughout the NT and across Australia. • Our President David Jochinke slams the Federal Government's recent correspondence on the live cattle class action, calling it an “appalling attack on victims”. Last week Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus accused victims of trying to "line their pockets". Mr Jochinke, who is in the NT, has called this out as being “outrageously misleading” and a “disgraceful attempt to bluff the public”. "The 2011 ban still causes pain. People have died, businesses collapsed, and families suffered. Yet, the Government continues this contemptuous behaviour," he said. The Government's offer doesn’t cover the full impact, ignoring the market crash, cattle deaths, and forced property sales. "The Government is briefing nonsense instead of being a model litigant.” Read more in our media release ➡️

  • For decades 12 rural families have banded together to call for improved train lighting after losing loved ones. This includes fierce advocate Lara Jensen whose brother was killed in a triple fatality at an unlit crossing in 2000 in Western Australia. A coronial inquest into the crash found no one in the vehicle had seen the train due to inadequate train lighting and no warning signs on the approach to the crossing. It’s time to make our roads and rail safer. We encourage everyone to get behind this petition to make train lighting mandatory. ✍️ https://buff.ly/45ZsbWA 📸 Lara Jensen’s children at the memorial sight opposite the Yarramony level crossing where their uncle (Lara’s brother) Christian Jensen and his friends Hilary Smith and Jess Broad were killed.

  • NAIDOC WEEK ❤️💛🖤 ROEBUCK PLAINS STATION Roebuck Plains is a successful Indigenous-owned cattle station in Western Australia. The Yawuru people are the traditional owners of the lands and waters in and around Rubibi (the town of Broome). The Yawuru language name for the land on which Roebuck Plains Station is located, is Gumaranganyjal. Gumaranganyjal covers 276,000 hectares, including Roebuck Export Depot. It’s strategically located for the export market, on a rich marine floodplain, just 30 kilometres east of Broome, with the capacity to support a herd of up to 18,000 head of cattle. The Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC) purchased Roebuck Plains Station in 1999. In 2006, Yawuru were granted native title over 530,000 hectares of land in and around Rubibi, including the station and the depot. The station and the depot were divested back to Yawuru in 2014, recognising Yawuru’s traditional ownership of the area, with the ILSC managing the station and the depot via a lease agreement. In February 2022, Yawuru took over the pastoral operations of the station, and will work with the ILSC to transfer operations of the export depot in the future. The station uses a shared management model to balance Yawuru cultural values and sustainable land use. The station provides expansive training and employment opportunities to the local community. Moving forward, the station is looking to expand its operations and diversity across tourism, hunting and resource collection, minerals exploration and carbon offset market opportunities.
