I recently had the pleasure of participating in a panel with Vanessa Carter, Mary Lynne Van Poelgeest-Pomfret, Krista Bracke, and Claudia Louati, organised by European Patients'​ Forum and The AMR Narrative. I shared my experience through recurrent post-surgery infections resulting in frequent antibiotic consumption. We discussed the need to address common misconceptions through education and, more importantly, to change behaviours of self-medication to effectively combat the growing crisis of AMR. We also discussed combating patient stigma, and using storytelling to provide relatable, real-life examples amid an information overload. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), otherwise known as athérosclérose (in FR) or slagaderverkalking (in NL), is a silent killer affecting an estimated 750,000 Belgians. In case of ASCVD, fat accumulates in the arteries. Calcification hardens the fat and can lead to a narrowing of the veins. When the arteries narrow, there is less or even no blood flow to important organs such as the heart and brain, potentially leading to heart attacks and strokes. That’s why it’s crucial to have your cholesterol checked on a regular basis. 👩‍⚕️ As part of ASCVD Awareness Month and to prioritise our people’s health, we offered cholesterol testing this week at both our Vilvoorde and Puurs sites. Join us for Dorien De Pooter’s public PhD defence on ‘Preclinical evaluation of therapeutic pDNA and mRNA vaccines for chronic hepatitis B’. Most infants infected with the hepatitis B virus are unable to eliminate it, resulting in 300 million chronically infected individuals who face a heightened risk of permanent liver damage and liver cancer. Currently available therapies are unable to completely eradicate the virus and new therapies are under investigation to suppress the virus, so that chances of developing liver damage and cancer are reduced. This thesis focuses on the development and preclinical evaluation of therapeutic vaccines as part of such a treatment. These vaccines act as immunomodulators, activating the tolerant immune system by generating new or boosting existing HBV-specific T-cells capable of eliminating infected hepatocytes. Healthcare-associated #COVID19 was a significant contributor to the increased burden of HAIs in the #ECDC #PPS 2022-2023, as compared with the previous PPS in 2016-2017. SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, ranked as the fourth most common microorganism in HAIs and accounted for 7% of all HAIs. 16% of the cases were severe. These results highlight the importance of implementing preventive measures for respiratory viral infections in healthcare settings: early testing for the timely diagnosis of respiratory viral infections followed by the application of transmission-based precautions as well as, during periods of high prevalence of respiratory viral infections in the community, considering universal or targeted clinical masking in the healthcare setting. #hospitalinfection #infectioncontrol #respiratoryviralinfections #covid19

📃Scientific paper: Stadium IIA/B-seminoma testis: retroperitoneale lymfeklierdissectie als alternatief voor chemotherapie en radiotherapie? Abstract: Standard of care for stage IIA seminoma testis (1–5 enlarged retroperitoneal lymph nodes ≤ 2 cm) and stage IIB-seminoma testis (lymph nodes 2–5 cm or > 5 nodes) consists of chemotherapy or radiotherapy. These treatments increase the risk of cardiovascular morbidity, secondary malignancies and cause excess mortality at long-term follow-up. Recently, six cohort studies have investigated the efficacy of retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) for stage IIA/B seminoma testis. It was shown that 70–80% of patients remain disease free after primary RPLND without adjuvant treatment. Although a minimally invasive (robot assisted) RPLND could be an alternative for chemotherapy or radiotherapy, a recurrence rate of 20–30% seems unacceptable. Risk-stratification is necessary to improve patient selection. In case of a higher recurrence risk a primary RPLND might be an option under the condition that a single cycle of chemotherapy is administered. The most fascinating thing about this study is that difference in weight loss between semaglutide group and placebo group was only 6%. That is pretty small difference for an expensive intervention. Clearly, there are other non-weight loss benefits but those are also moderate at best from number to treat perspective. More and more data is showing that in real world scenarios achieving meaningful weight loss in complex populations is not a walk in the park. Well designed study!

As we round the corner to the end of Patient Experience Week, this TedEx talk, which is going on 13 years old, still applies. There are delineations between patient satisfaction and experience. - Satisfaction measures are markers of achieving service delivery desired thresholds. Did we do what we’re supposed to do? - Experience measures are markers of how patients FEEL about how we achieved our service delivery desired thresholds. Did we do what we pledge to do for a positive patient experience? We can say, yes, we helped a patient get well and here’s their clinical quality outcomes etc. But did the patient FEEL seen, heard, valued, respected, empowered… etc. Fred Lee is no longer with us, and while some of his takes on healthcare delivery are, well, a teeny dated (no, not all nurses are a “she”), this is a highly viewed, relevant, and also a little humorous.
