Founded in 2014 as a spin-off of the French Blood Bank (EFS), PDC*line Pharma is a Belgian-French clinical-stage biotech company that develops an innovative class of active immunotherapies for cancers, based on a GMP-grade allogeneic therapeutic cell line of Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cells (PDC*line). PDC*line is much more potent than conventional dendritic cell-based vaccines in priming and boosting antitumor antigen-specific cytotoxic T-cells, including the T-cells specific for neoantigens, and is synergistic with checkpoint inhibitors. The technology can potentially be applied to any type of cancer. Following a first-in-human phase I feasibility study in melanoma, PDC*line Pharma focuses on the development of PDC*lung01, a candidate for Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) currently in phase I/II trials, and PDC*neo with neoantigens in preclinical development. The company has a staff of 42, with an experienced management team. It has raised close to €61M in equity and non-dilutive funding. In March 2019, PDC*line Pharma granted an exclusive license to the LG Chem Life Sciences company in South Korea and an exclusive option in other Asian countries, for the development and commercialization of the PDC*lung01 cancer vaccine for lung cancer. The total deal is worth €108M, plus tiered royalties on net sales in Asia. Many stakeholders discussed yesterday in #Brussels the importance of the EU’s global competitiveness for Europeans living with rare diseases. Caroline Ven , CEO of #pharmabe, stressed that competitiveness is key. pharma.be’s memorandum for the 2024 national elections is entitled “For a healthy Belgium”. Healthy in terms of both its citizens and the economy of the country. Caroline Ven: “To secure future #competitiveness of the #EU, three cornerstones need to be in place: increased fundamental R&D the right conditions for entrepreneurship and performant national #healthcare systems, including sufficient budgets for innovative treatments including for rare diseases.”. “For example, only 53% of the 19 orphan dossiers, including advanced therapy medicinal products ( #ATMPs), analysed in 2023 by the Belgian Commission of Reimbursement led to reimbursement.”. In addition, she focussed on the many Unmet Medical Needs still existing. Industry has the addressing of #UMNs at its very core. But sometimes it takes huge efforts, e.g., $ 42 billion has already been spent on clinical trials for Alzheimer’s diseases, without a cure being available yet. At the same time, it is not just about breakthrough #innovation, room for incremental innovation is absolutely crucial: this is true across industries. Belgium has made significant efforts to create an attractive climate for investments, and has become the #healthvalley #biotechvalley of tomorrow. We shouldn’t resign, as the sector is an essential part of the Belgian economy, but the international competition to attract investments is increasing. In order to strengthen and progress the sector’s competitiveness, HST firmly believes that several measures are necessary. This includes the preservation of the bioplatform with the authorities, effective utilisation of health data and finding middle ground between regulation and innovation. The biopharma sector does not operate in isolation but collaborates with the whole ecosystem. Hence, HST calls for government participation in issues that involve multiple sectors, industries and stakeholders. This is crucial to ensure the sustained success of Belgium’s healthcare industry on the global stage. Boersma: “While the dairy industry is faced by a multitude of challenges, I believe that the sector has shown great agility and adaption over the years and continues to do so. When it comes to mitigating global warming for example, the sector is positioning itself more as being the solution (backed by technology and expertise), instead of being the problem. At the same time, the sector also alters to new demands from the market. A great example of this is the prolonged calf-cow contact. There is a potential high reward for prolonging this contact from an animal welfare and end-consumer perspective. But the question we need to ask ourself is how to apply this successfully in practice, keeping both cow and calf healthy and maintaining economic performance at the same time.” In his presentation, Boersma will touch on these topics in more detail and identify more megatrends and their potential impact on animal health and the future of dairy farming. Novo Nordisk proudly supported the awareness campaign of the Ligue Cardiologique Belge / Belgische Cardiologische Liga last month. This campaign placed a critical focus on atherosclerosis, a condition affecting at least 750,000 people in Belgium. The initiative aimed to educate the public about atherosclerosis and its potential risk factors and also referred to the vital importance of early screening and detection. The focus should also be on prevention where sufficient physical activity and a balanced healthy diet are amongst the initiatives than can be taken. Understanding that prevention is better than cure, the campaign urges people to prioritise regular health check-ups, including monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and other cardiovascular risk factors. Novo Nordisk remains committed to supporting such impactful initiatives, aiming to enhance public awareness, promote proactive health practices, and ultimately contribute to improved cardiovascular health across Belgium. pharma.be's latest data highlights significant growth in Belgium's #biopharmaceutical industry in 2023: 📈 Employment Doubled: Jobs in the sector more than doubled in 25 years, continuing to rise despite global competition. 💼 Direct Employment: Nearly 45,000 people were directly employed by biopharmaceutical companies in 2023, marking an 18.6% increase over five years. 🌍 Export Growth: Biopharma now represents almost 15% of Belgium's total exports, a tenfold increase over 25 years, outperforming other key sectors. 💰 Added Value: The industry generates €13.4 billion in added value, up 92.9% from pre-Covid times. 🔬 R&D Investment: Over €15 million invested daily in R&D, totaling €5.7 billion, a 58.4% increase in the last five years. These figures show once again the tremendous positive impact on Belgium's economy and the lives of #patients.
