About us
The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is a national advocacy organization that works to advance the collective aspirations of First Nations individuals and communities across Canada on matters of national or international nature and concern. The AFN hosts two Assemblies a year where mandates and directives for the organization are established through resolutions directed and supported by the First Nations in Assembly (elected Chiefs or proxies from member First Nations). In addition to the direction provided by Chiefs of each member First Nation, the AFN is guided by an Executive Committee consisting of an elected National Chief and Regional Chiefs from each province and territory. Representatives from five national councils (Knowledge Keepers, Youth, Veterans, 2SLGBTQQIA+ and Women) support and guide the decisions of the Executive Committee. The AFN is honored to be named as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers 2023 and National Capital Region’s Top Employers 2023. Today marks a historic day. AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak has announced a commitment of $47.8 billion in funding from the Government of Canada for the long-term reform of First Nations Child and Family Services. This commitment has been secured after years of legal challenges and negotiations and significantly higher than the initial commitment of $19.8 billion made by Canada in 2021. The draft settlement agreement will be publicly available to all First Nations Chiefs in the coming days. Following this, the AFN will conduct regional engagement sessions throughout July and mid-September to further discuss the details of the draft settlement agreement. These discussions will be the focus of a Special Chiefs Assembly planned for September 2024, where Chiefs will deliberate and vote on the proposed measures. Ultimately, the direction of the proposed reforms and the settlement agreement will be determined by the Chiefs themselves. More information on the engagement sessions and the Special Chiefs Assembly will be available soon. Read the press release here: https://ow.ly/qXOB50SzWC9.
