This is an interesting essay from Ed Zitron on why he thinks Generative AI is over-hyped. It’s a lengthy read but very provocative. The question is: is the current investment in Generative AI overhyped or not (not whether there is any benefits of GenAI). Said another way, are we in an investment bubble when over 50% of all venture investment is in GenAI and estimates vary but could easily top $1trillion in capital investments. “In plain English: generative AI isn't making any money for anybody because it doesn't actually make companies that use it any extra money. Efficiency is useful, but it is not company-defining. This is damning for many reasons, chief of which is that the biggest thing that artificial intelligence is meant to do is be smart, and make you smarter. Being able to access information faster might make you better at your job, but that's efficiency rather than allowing you to do something new. Generative AI isn't creating new jobs, it isn't creating new ways to do your job, and it isn't making anybody any money — and the path to boosting revenues is unclear.” There are some interesting issues the author raises such as the massive energy inputs and chip infrastructure costs. Would love reactions to this essay the issue of a bubble and not whether GenAI has value to a business.
