STARS provides life-saving critical care, anywhere: on the ground, in the air and virtually.

About us

EVERY LIFE IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR. Every day, STARS takes care of some of the most critical patients in Western Canada. We're able to do it because we've built a strong foundation through our Vision and Mission. OUR ORIGIN STORY It all began when a pregnant woman from a rural community died from blood loss, leaving a father alone with their newborn. For STARS founder Dr. Powell, her death was one too many. Something had to be done. Motivated to change emergency care across rural Alberta, Dr. Powell and his colleagues created a helicopter air ambulance service, which was built and supported by the community. While the faces have changed, STARS team members continue to be motivated by our passion for saving more lives and our desire to be the disruptive innovator who contributes to transformation in the health-care system. As we’ve grown and evolved, STARS has never wavered from our mission. Fundamentally we all believe that where you live – or work, play and travel – shouldn’t impact your chance of survival. Our strategy focuses on three core groups that are integral to our fight to save lives: PATIENTS - VIPs (Very Important Patients) are at the centre of our universe and at the forefront of everything we do. CREW - Our missions would not be possible without everyone who works here and makes it a reality. ALLIES - We have a community of supporters who play a vital role in our efforts to save lives.

That's a wrap for the 7th annual Field of STARS, presented by Nutrien! On Tuesday night, the Saskatchewan community came together and raised $460k in a single evening. With the auction now closed, we’re thrilled to announce that the final total is a record-breaking $550k! 🎉🎉 We are so grateful for the support of our donors, our sponsors and the Saskatchewan agriculture community. The funds raised will further our mission to deliver critical care, anywhere across Saskatchewan. Thank you. ❤️ #FieldofSTARS #AginMotion #agriculture

Critical patients may now receive care quicker than ever before, thanks to the launch of a virtual care trial by STARS in partnership with the Saskatchewan Health Authority. The program allows STARS transport physicians to use a video link to support providers treating critically ill or injured patients. Once a call is underway, a STARS transport physician can offer to launch a video consult with the local physician to "see" the patient and provide more support, diagnosis, and guidance. The transport physician can then send the gathered information to both STARS air medical crews and specialists at the receiving hospital, who can prepare for the best course of treatment.  To learn more, visit: https://ow.ly/1E9j50SxbrS

To enhance and improve patient care practices, STARS hosted its first Transport Physician conference. Representatives from all the STAR’S bases – Grand Prairie, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg – participated in seminars at the University of Calgary’s cadaver lab. Central to the conference was gaining familiarity with rare procedures that may be required in certain emergency situations; they are uncommon, but not unheard of in the emergency medical field. The event offered a variety of critical procedure training sessions as well as the presence of cadavers for more of the hands-on aspect of the lessons. We are thrilled to announce that two of our esteemed team members, Director of Maintenance Dwight Webb and Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Ryan Gillis, played key roles at the 2024 Skills Canada National Competition. This prestigious event for apprentice trades featured over 525 competitors across 45 trades and five provinces. Participants competed for gold, silver, and bronze in five rigorous, station-based projects. Dwight shared his expertise in evaluating the electrical and gas turbine projects as an external judge alongside Ryan, who served as the committee chair for Aerospace Technology (Aircraft Maintenance). By supporting this event, Dwight and Ryan had the opportunity to connect with colleges and young engineers across Canada, and scout skilled apprentice candidates for our engineering department. Join us in celebrating our team’s contributions to this incredible event!👏 #SCNC2024 #aircraftmaintenance #aircraftmaintenanceengineer #aerospacetechnology 📷𝘛𝘰𝘱 𝘳𝘰𝘸, 𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳: 𝘈𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘧𝘵 𝘔𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘌𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘙𝘺𝘢𝘯 𝘎𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘴 (𝘭𝘦𝘧𝘵) 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘋𝘸𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘞𝘦𝘣𝘣 (𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵) 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘬𝘦𝘺 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 2024 𝘚𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘥𝘢 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads, father figures, and mentors working on the front lines or working hard at home. Today, we celebrate you! ❤️ VIP Mike Herbison was on a routine service call when a head-on collision with a fully loaded gravel truck left him with severe injuries. Despite the odds, Mike's determination played a crucial role in his recovery. "David vs. Goliath," he said with a laugh. "I won, in my opinion. I’m still here." #FathersDay2024
