Wow. What an incredible week at the Vector Institute! 🚀 1️⃣ Ten amazing days of the CIFAR #DLRL Summer School 2024 concluded this week! Vector Institute hosted researchers from around the world to learn and explore topics such as AI Safety, reinforcement learning, AI for science, NLP, robotics, music + AI, and AI for health, among many others. For more details, check out this article: https://lnkd.in/gAP3NikN 2️⃣ Alongside Vector Institute Faculty Member Gautam Kamath, we brought together the Vector Institute ML Privacy and Security community for the second edition of our annual workshop. (new blog coming soon). 3️⃣ Concluding the week with a visit by The University of British Columbia's Purang Abolmaesumi, hosted by Vector Faculty Member Parvin Mousavi. He shared insights into the journey his research team has taken to mobilize ML technologies, enhancing decision support for point-of-care ultrasound imaging in British Columbia. Exciting times ahead.

☀ The last 3 days of CIFAR’s DLRL Summer School wrapped with Vector Researchers providing key insights in healthcare, privacy, and prompting: + Anna Goldenberg emphasized the importance of careful time series data analysis and the need for explainable AI tools in clinical settings. + Nisarg Shah introduced us to strategyproof mechanisms to prevent manipulation in AI systems and highlighted the importance of fairness in AI decision-making. + Michael Brudno stressed that AI should support rather than replace healthcare professionals, presenting projects that make AI more robust in clinical pathways. + David Duvenaud discussed the challenges of ensuring AI systems behave as intended, emphasizing the need for better understanding of AI decision-making processes. + David Emerson showcased how prompting can make AI models more versatile, with techniques like few-shot and chain-of-thought prompting enhancing model performance. + Xiaoxiao Li highlighted the risks of data breaches and the promise of federated learning in protecting individual privacy. To mark the 20th anniversary of DLRL, CIFAR hosted a special event last night to celebrate the accomplishments of the last 20 years and inspire the next generation of AI professionals. Murad Hemmadi of the The Logic moderated an alumni panel on career paths in AI featuring Canada CIFAR AI Chair and professor at the University of Guelph Graham Taylor, Senior Applied AI Scientist at MDA Space Luz Angélica Caudillo Mata, Ph.D. and and co-founder of GPTZero Alex Cui. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate this milestone and the completion of another successful year! ..... Pour marquer le 20e anniversaire de l’École d’été APAR, le CIFAR a organisé un événement spécial hier soir pour célébrer les réalisations des 20 dernières années et inspirer la prochaine génération de spécialistes de l’IA. 21 new laser materials have been uncovered in a groundbreaking global study conducted by six research teams from five global laboratories, including Alán Aspuru-Guzik's Acceleration Consortium, based at the University of Toronto. Alán is the Co-Director of our Accelerated Decarbonization research program.
