Carriers getting choosy on what they carry – opting for lighter loads. Container lines are becoming increasingly selective about the commodities they want to carry, targeting “more for less, in size” during the peak season rush. Heavy and overweight shipments have taken a hard knockback from carriers working to push vessel loads on available space from India to Europe, amid strong booking demand, according to market sources. They noted that major liners were pushing for lightweight freight bookings and tightened their cargo weight policies to realise their stowage plans. They have also put hefty penalties in place for cargo weight deviations, rising to $2,000 if the discrepancy is over nine tonnes, according to a new advisory from Hapag-Lloyd for exports from India, for which its “weight deviation fee” had been revised. https://lnkd.in/eDNAwSms #carriers #freightforwarding #containershipping #globaltrade #logisticssolutions

From the Financial Post The largest trading partnership in the world is being tested. Canada falling behind Mexico as America's No. 1 partner. Trade between Canada and the United States totalled $920 billion in the year ending in the first quarter of 2024, or an average of $2.5 billion in trade crossing the border every day. Two-way trade between the United States and Mexico totalled $905 billion, and is on track to surpass Canada sometime this year, they said. https://lnkd.in/gKe2inN6 #globaltrade #CUSMA #exports #Canada #USA #Mexico #tradebalance

German Seaports Brought to Standstill by Strikes Ahead of Wage Negotiations Germany’s power labor union Ver.di called another round of “warning strikes” at the major #containerports starting on Tuesday and continuing into Wednesday ahead of the next round of wage and contract negotiations. The union openly says its objective is to pressure terminal operators represented by ZDS (Zentralverband der deutschen Seehafenbetriebe) into a deal while calling the previous offers “inadequate” to keep up with inflation and the demands of the job. #Dockworkers staged a series of #strikes during June tied to each of the three prior rounds of negotiations. Under German labor law, the union is free to call these short-duration “warning strikes” without conducting full votes of the membership each time. Negotiations began in May on the new contract for 11,500 employees at German North Sea ports. #Germany #containershipping #exports #imports https://lnkd.in/gUPj9dVh

Container Rates Now Four Times Higher Than Pre-Pandemic Levels. Drewry’s composite global index increased by 10%, driven by significant rate increases on major trade routes. Container freight rates are continuing their upward trajectory, with Q3 2024 poised to be one of the most profitable quarters in history. Recent rate increases in July are taking hold, contributing to a significant rise in shipping costs across major routes. Drewry’s composite global index saw a 10% increase yesterday, reaching $5,868 per FEU (forty-foot equivalent unit). Although this is 43% below the pandemic peak of $10,377 in September 2021, it is still 313% higher than the average 2019 pre-pandemic rate of $1,420. #freightrates #containershipping #inflation Manish Nair Candice Rucaj Brad Appel https://lnkd.in/gvzm3QS8

Canadian border agents ratify labor deal. The new agreement for the more than 9,000 represented employees runs through June 2026. Canadian border agents overwhelmingly ratified a new four-year labor agreement, the government of Canada and the Public Service Alliance of Canada and Customs and Immigration Union announced July 4. More than 90% of the members who cast ballots voted in favor of the new labor deal, which covers the period between June 2022 and June 2026. A spokesperson for the union would not disclose how many of the more than 9,000 represented members participated in the ratification vote. The union and the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat reached a tentative four-year labor agreement on June 11, with the two sides reaching a consensus after nine days of mediated talks. The represented members of the Canada Border Services Agency had been working without a contract for two years. #CBSA #brorderservices #unionagreement #customscompliance https://lnkd.in/gcATEDxT

B.C. longshore foreman strike averted after Industrial Relations Board steps in. On Friday, the BCMEA said ILWU Local 514 — the union representing hundreds of the province’s ship and dock foremen — issued a 72-hour notice of intended strike against terminal operator company DP World (Canada) Inc. A strike by ship and dock foremen at B.C.’s ports has been averted after a decision from Canada’s Industrial Relations Board (CIRB). According to a release from B.C.’s Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA), the CIRB found the strike action went against Canada’s Labour Code. As a result, the board has ordered ILWU Local 514 to rescind their strike notice and advise their members about it. #BC #BCMEA #ILWU #strike #portstrike https://lnkd.in/gU7eVKrU
