“It was a new school, there are only 82 students in all grades, and 17 in grade 8 which I am the class teacher. Some of them are already started missing their family, some are extraordinary naughty, most are innocent and obedient. But there in the corner, the silent girl with big eyes, full of curiosity, is different. She is reluctant to take boring dictations in the class, most teacher has already complained about her, instead she gives back the return gift with her signature ‘Monalisa-smile’. But within two months, she became the most prominent inquirer in her science class. Her questions were neither to test the knowledge of the teacher, nor to show-off her knowledge like most of her classmates of that age, but they were different in every sense. She inquired about diaper gel (sodium polyacrylate) and its possible use in alternate farming, she talked about drip irrigation, vertical rooftop gardens, she talked about bugs to oppose bugs. She was a different child, significant in her own way. At the end of the school year, when all her classmates are excited about the human reproductive systems, the last exciting chapter in the sciences, she was more into ethics of cloning and GMO. She taught the school a lesson in pluralism, when everyone sings the same note, it doesn’t become symphony. Somehow her thoughts started resonating with mine. I was branded as ‘different’ teacher, she started visiting me in odd hours, between the lessons, break time, to discuss all weirdest and wild ideas in science from bionic arms to large hadron collider at CERN. Suddenly I discovered I became a part of her family and when I was preparing to write a recommendation letter as her higher level chemistry teacher, and mentor in her extended essay, she disappeared leaving the school for Canada, where her family decided to drop the anchor finally. For a long time that void remained in my heart because in this age of selfie and social networking, she was an exceptional thinker, who always thought of going back to her roots and do something within her own limit to improve the life of those down trodden. ”
