“Katie is the girl everyone needs on their team. I had a recent web design client who brought Katie on for PR, and she made the whole project so organized and smooth. She did such a great job communicating the needs of the client, while also advocating for me as the designer. Katie is well spoken, organized, and hard working. I knew that if I asked her for something it would be done. She represented the client so well and their values that sometimes I forgot that she didn’t actually work for them as a full time employee. As a former wedding photographer, I think the best analogy I can come up with to describe Katie’s role is like a wedding planner for a wedding. Sure you can totally plan your wedding without one. But if you want a seamless, effortless day without the worry and confusion, you need a wedding planner. And for your next project, you need Katie. ”

What are the best strategies to become a thought leader in your industry?
The best way to become a thought leader in your industry is to create value by teaching something new. Thought leadership comes from not just being a participant in an industry but rather by adding to the conversation with new insights and ideas. There a many ways to express your insights. At MicDrop, we recommend a 360 degree approach—which includes a combination of blogs, whitepapers, reports, videos, social media, events, newsletters, press features and speaking opportunities. Speaking truly gives you an incredible platform to share your knowledge and when you couple that with other valuable takeaways for your audience (reports they can download, blogs they can read etc.) you really help yourself stand out in your industry.

What can you do to minimize anxiety before a presentation?
There are many great tips in this article, one often overlooked tip is to learn about your audience. Understand who is in the room and what they care about. What challenges are they likely facing? What are some of their shared values and goals? From my experience, the best talks are given by speakers who truly know who they are talking to. Personalized stories and relatable anecdotes trump generic keynotes every single time. When you've researched and learned who the audience is, this reduces anxiety as you have taken the time to "get to know" who will be in the room before you even step foot into it.

What are some techniques to develop a strong speaking voice when using a microphone?
The best speakers are relaxed at the microphone. They breathe calmly, take well-placed pauses and stand tall. This comes with experience but there a few general tips that work well when you’re starting out: • Hold the microphone close to your mouth. One of the best ways to feel confident when speaking is to not be afraid to be loud. Ensure that you “fill the room” with your voice. Sure, there are technical tips down the line to worry about such as popping “p’s” etc. but in the beginning, it’s best to get used to speaking strongly. •Talk at a speed that is a touch slower than you would normally talk. With the speaker system & potential echoing in the room, it is good practice to slow things down a little & focus on emphasizing your words.
