Last week at our internal meetup at Solita I gave a talk “Please don’t do that” about the most frequent accessibility issues and how to avoid them. (Wanna hear it too? Join me in Tampere on 6th of June at TampereJS! https://lnkd.in/dFWbE-Ki) The second most frequent accessibility issue is missing alternative text on images; one of the participants asked if it would be possible to bake-in an alternative text into the image’s metadata. Solving the lack of alts for sure, but would that be the way to go? The intent is indeed good and the solution is technically possible, but there’s quite a few problems with it. Eric Bailey wrote a great piece on this, analyzing so many aspects: from images being contextual, through localization, performance, tone, all the way to manipulation and malware. Give it a read for some pleasant horizon-broadening: https://lnkd.in/d2e2evcE

After much hard work, today we officially released our user facing EU-election AI chatbot "Valkompisen": https://lnkd.in/d-WbXn63 . This project is a cooperation between Aftonbladet Editorial Team and the Aftonbladet AI-hub team. The "Election Buddy" is based on OpenAI's GPT-4 technology. To ensure the provision of relevant and accurate information about the EU and the EU elections, we have created a database containing facts reviewed by Aftonbladet's journalists. It also includes responses to multiple surveys answered by the eight parliamentary parties and their top 10 candidates. A significant part of the database also consists of facts about the EU election, the structure of the EU, the history of the EU, current topics in the EU debate, votes in the European Parliament, party groups, and much more. When a user asks a question, the AI bot performs a semantic search in the database to retrieve relevant facts. The bot then combines this information and formulates a well-founded response. The Election Buddy has also been provided with guidelines, or "prompts," that direct how it should use the information to respond and what tone and personality it should convey. To ask questions you can press the predefined questions or login to ask your own questions.

What’s the first step you should make before moving to cloud? Ask yourself WHY? ☁️ 💬 That’s typically what we ask our clients. Why do you want to move your application to cloud? What is your motivation? What are the pain points you’re currently dealing with? Moving to cloud just for the sake of moving to cloud isn’t enough. If you don't adapt to the cloud environment, you miss out on opportunities for increased efficiency and optimization within the cloud. Martin Hauskrecht talked about this and more with Oliver Kriska & Daniel Harcek in the 0101 Podcast, thanks for having us! Check it out 🎧 #podcast #lablabs #cloudnative #devops

In several studies and anonymized pollings, researchers found that 👉🏻 More than half of people would rather work at company X where they would have highest salary among their peers than in company Y where they would have 10% higher salary than in X but it wouldn’t be highest salary among their peers in Y. Percentage og people who responds like these varies depending on the difference between their salaries in X and Y. Bigger the difference less people would choose X. 👉🏻 On the other hand, when salary is replaced with a number of vacation days, without exception everyone choose Y over X (more vacation days in an absolute number, disregarding how it compares to their peers). Why do you think people reason that way when salary is in question but not when vacations days are? And what would be your choice in case of salary, assuming 10% percent is the difference - X or Y? #salary #colleagues #jobs #money #vacation #company #work #psychology #reasoning

Hi! It's me again. I'm going rant, again, about Swedish tech companies and their ridiculous claims. Recently, the Head of HR at Spotify claims that they are struggling because they can't find enough tech competence in Sweden (https://lnkd.in/da6iuKDE, article in Swedish). She claims it's hard to recruit people from outside Sweden to move here due to taxes. Sure, there might be people who decides to not move here due to our taxes, but is that really Spotify's actual problem? This is an 18 years old company that have never made a profit for a full year. It's the largest music streaming service that has more than 10x the number of engineers compared to some of their competitors. They have tried other areas, like video (never launched as far as I know), hardware, and podcasts, but despite all their efforts nothing turned out to be very successful, and it's not like these products are technical failures. I'm no expert in Product Management, but maybe the problem Spotify have isn't a lack of engineers. Maybe they need better product managers? I would say that the engineers at Spotify are doing an excellent job. Without them and their hack-week projects we wouldn't have some of the great features that Spotify have launched. Even interns seems to do a better job than their product managers (https://lnkd.in/dx-hHtQF). This isn't unique to Spotify. We got lots of very popular services from tech companies that never managed to turn a profit. Truecaller, Klarna, Bambuser, etc. They all struggle financially and their services works great, so why aren't they able to make a profit? It can't be the lack of engineers or designers. Maybe instead of firing firing your employees you should fire your product managers? If you have most of the users on a market and still can't make it profitable, maybe you shouldn't have the job of managing the product?

We are officially on the map! 🗺 Last month Keith Lia and I had the pleasure of presenting at IDA’s Driving AI 2024 conference, and spend the day surrounded by incredibly talented people. 👏 We got to nerd out about how we’re tackling quality assessment when it comes to using language models, within a field so creative and diverse as the games industry. 🤓 In the industry we are making massive progress in evaluating language models across the board, especially when it comes to reasoning, math, coding and other technical aspects, however we’re trying to hone in on something a bit more elusive: artistic quality. 🖌 In order for our writers and designers to trust and rely on the tools that we make for them, we need to be able to make concrete quality assurances and give them full creative control over our systems, or in plain English: build good and reliable sh*t. 🤟 For those interested, the talk can be viewed on IDA Play here: https://lnkd.in/dwWbEXfa On a more personal note for team, this also marked Raw Power Tools first public appearance, and we can’t wait to share more about what’s going on in our awesome team! 🎉 Thanks to the rest of the team, both for building cool sh*t with us, and in helping two data engineers pprepare for public exposure 😉 Annemette Kiil Mørup, Wolf Rittershofer, DJ Human, Ioanna Arkoudi, Jan Szwagierczak, Morten Ib Kjærgaard Munk & Jonathan Dam Bödewadt-Pedersen Lastly, a massive shoutout to the staff, hosts and other presenters at Driving AI 24! It was a memorable experience, and we took away a lot of golden nuggets 💡 #DrivingAI24 #RawPowerTools #RawPowerGames

How did Spotify build an algorithm that actually seems to know what music you want to listen to? By consistently pushing to improve the experience for listeners. “We built similarity vectors between songs and playlists,” says Spotify Co-President, CPO & CTO Gustav Söderström. While these similarity vectors offered unique discovery experiences for listeners, the product still had limitations. "We had no genre understanding," says Soderstrom. To solve this challenge, Spotify acquired The Echo Nest, an intelligence company skilled in classifying music. “Then we could start building great sessions where we could actually promise you that this is going to be Swedish pop, or this is going to be this vibe, not just these songs are similar in a vector space," explains Söderström. Which products or companies have you seen leveraging AI in forward-thinking ways? Tell us in the comments. #BuildingOne, a podcast hosted by LinkedIn's Chief Product Officer Tomer Cohen, features insights from top product leaders. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐯𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬 I've worked in 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭-𝐮𝐩𝐬, IT 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬, from niche to mid-sized to Large, the IT dept of non-software companies, and software 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 companies. Let me share some 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐬 and 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬 about working in the different ones. 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐔𝐋𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐈𝐄𝐒 I'll be honest: consultancies have a strong hold over the tech sector in Norway, as there simply isn't many or any big software product companies to speak of. Only small/start-ups. So, a lot of the talent pool is working in consultancies. I eventually left my home country to work in a Software 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵 company 🏡 💼 🛫 🌍 😁 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐬: ➕ Work with experts & technology specialists ➕ Access to great training programs, technical and non-technical ➕ Exposure to many different industries! - Public and private sector. Retail, airports, energy, agriculture, government - etc! 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬: ➖ Tech > Problem-solving: You're sold as a <insert tech> dev. ➖ Process & Red tape - Pre-defined deliveries/contracts means things can be slow or difficult to change ➖ Little to no ownership of the product ➖ Certifications > Impact - Consultancies wants you to be easy to sell. Certs works as a proof of your skills. 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐃𝐔𝐂𝐓 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭-𝐮𝐩𝐬 I had an internship in a start-up as a CS student. This experience was invaluable. I later worked as a software engineer in a start-up, and worked on some very cool projects. Had a lot of fun, learned a lot. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐬: ➕ Fast paced, not boring ➕ You can and must wear many hats ➕ Could be career making 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬: ➖ Little to no structure or process ➖ Potentially nowhere to grow ➖ A big risk that might not pay off. If you're in a start-up, make sure to get something out of it even if the start-up doesn't succeed. 𝐍𝐨𝐧-𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬 I worked in television(!) As a Business Intelligence dev & analyst. Basically a data engineers & Data scientist. ➕ Can have big impact on the product/business ➕ Exposure to potentially interesting domain ➕ Help non-technical stakeholders ➖ Not solving for the core business, not prioritized ➖ Slow to adopt new tech. ➖ Lonely - No dev community. Things like Code quality, CI/CD, DevOps, DevEx... is up to you/your dept, or nonexistent. 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬 I might be biased here as I currently work in a Software product company, something I wanted for a long time. ➕ Have a big impact on the core business and or for customers ➕ Win by solving interesting & challenging industry problems in smart ways over use <insert tech> by all means. ➕ Ownership of product over time ➕ Career growth opportunities ➖ Working in a high performance environment can be stressful ➖ Bias for action or bust ➖ Learn how to deal with Ambiguity or have a bad time Please let me know what you think of this!!!

“Yo!” – This is how I usually say “Hi!” to people around me, at least to the one's that I have a tiny bit closer relationship than a formal one. However, that had to be “adjusted” for the task I've put myself to. Last time I posted about my new position at Captomatic. Which might sound like “big news”, but in this post, I want to talk about something different. While having a glance at the post itself, to see how it was doing, I've noticed the something in the attached .gif image. There was a white plastic piece attached to my shirt. While everything was calculated and accounted for, noticing it for the N-th time inspired me to write this post, which is going to be about me stepping in front of a camera for the first time. There are 2 parts to this short story. Got a little too carried away while writing and the full story is too long to post at once, so it is a good thing it's split. Will start with the personal one, something tells me that this is what people here might be more interested in :) As mentioned before, this was first time for me stepping in front of a camera. It's not like I have never been filmed before. Let me specify – this was the first time for me stepping in front of a camera to deliberately deliver information to the audience. From the countless meetings and calls with clients, potential clients and “leads”, I've got an idea that it is much more efficient to show how one of our systems work in a video, rather than spending time at each meeting or drawing 1001 sales materials and diagrams, that each individual will interpret in a different way. This just seemed like a more appropriate way to deliver the information. I came up with a plan to film a video that I can easily send my colleagues at sales and my potential clients, where I showcase the new system. The concept is simple – me standing next to a screen and showing the viewer how simple it is to use our new app. On paper – simple, in practice – a little bit less that simple. Can't say that the filming process and video itself was perfect, nor can I say it was bad. All of it turned out the way I expected it to. I am more than satisfied of how the equipment worked, maybe except the color-grading between the iPhone main camera and the “3x zoom” one. The video editing process took a lot more time than expected, learned a lot during the process. The most challenging part was the “act”. I had prepared a script for the video. To be fair, mostly (underline this), the video follows the script, but boy was it hard to keep up. Note to self – read the script a couple of more times beforehand, while You can have takes during filming – the more You take – the more You will regret it during editing. I even thought of sending my colleagues a blooper, where I say "..with all of that.." 18(!) times. Great experience, lots of small know-hows learned. The next part for sure will be better. The video itself is available here: https://lnkd.in/d2kjT_cX

As both a product designer and US expat, I 100% agree with this. They complain that they can’t find talent while talent is out there, YELLING INTO THE VOID, asking to be hired. You can find talent. You can KEEP talent. You just need to focus on what you do best and charge users FAIRLY for it. Oh, and if your made up numbers for what your estimated profits should be are not met, stop laying off your product talent and start laying off the clowns that came up with those figures (or force your executives to take a pay cut, starting with your CEO instead).

Gain 2 hours out of every work day! How? Using AI writing tools. But how do you know which one to choose based on your needs? Our intern Angelica Hugosson has put 4 popular AI writing tools to the test: Jasper, Rytr, Wordtune, and ChatGPT. Through evaluating user-friendliness, functionality, and creativity enhancement, here's her key points: 🖊️ Jasper excels with seamless usability, despite a heavy pricing. 🖊️ Rytr offers versatility, yet its free version has limitations. 🖊️ Wordtune refined text effectively, though with a daily limit. 🖊️ ChatGPT is user-friendly, but it lacks advanced features. But which one is the best?🚀 Read her test to find the top pick, so that you don't have to do the research yourself. A blog on (very) nerdy topic that I worked on with our (amazing) intern Xiangpeng Hao this year: https://lnkd.in/eQDfvNfH. We quantify how much of the discussion about changing Apache Parquet metadata was shiny-new-object syndrome and how much was actual technical limitations. We think there is easily a factor of 4 to be had from existing implementations before new formats are needed

Put your heart in it and make it happen. That's what these guys did when they gathered, teamed up with Google and created the competence developing forum ”Flutter Örebro” to put Sweden on the map of the global Flutter Community network!📍 We can't help but feel proud and inspired when we see Alexander, Jonas & Tommie paving the way for curious minds and tech students - by embracing and spreading knowledge about new technology. ”We want to challenge the future of front-end. Why not combine game theory and business applications, to see what can be done on a device? Utilize animations in your GUI and let the creativity guide you instead of the framework holding you back.” #futuretech #frontend #tech #flutter
