On this day last year, NASA released an image captured by the James Webb Space Telescope of one of the closest star-forming regions to our Solar System. ✨ 🔭 The Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, pictured below, is a formation of dense gas and dust 3,000 times the mass of the Sun in material. Within the interstellar cloud complex are hundreds of stars ranging in age from early stages of development to a million years old! Infineon IR HiRel rad hard power technology onboard the Space Telescope helped capture this “stellar nursery” in image. Our parts on the telescope’s MIRI and NIRCAM imagers enable spectrographic measurement, infrared imaging, and mirror alignment, respectively. Smaller, faster, more reliable, and more efficient: Wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductors have several advantages over their silicon (Si)-based counterparts. That is why we are expanding our power semiconductor market by building the world's largest 200mm silicon carbide power fab in Kulim - Infineon's first highly customized #WBG fab.🥳 Let's take a closer look at the benefits of silicon carbide (#SiC): 🍃 👉 SiC reduces power dissipation by enabling higher internal electric fields, thinner semiconductor layers and lower resistance, leading to significant improvements in energy efficiency. 👉 Its wide bandgap allows SiC to withstand higher temperatures, better dissipate heat, and reduce cooling requirements, contributing to potential CO2 savings. 👉 Overall, SiC's unique advantages make it a critical material for a greener and more efficient future, with potential implications for #automotive, #renewableenergy and industrial applications. With the construction of our third module at Kulim (#KLM3), we are extending our clear leadership in power semiconductors.
