- [Instructor] Business English can be full of idioms. That is phrases which often cannot be understood in a literal way where the meaning can't be guessed. Idioms are a lively and interesting part of the English language but can also be hard to learn and use correctly. We've already seen that the pay raise negotiations have reached a standstill but I could have said that in another way. I could have said that the negotiations have reached a deadlock. Not to worry though, maybe they will settle their differences and meet each other halfway. That is to say both parties will move towards each other. In the best possible scenario, they might even clinch the deal, and if not, hey, you can't win 'em all. Tell me about the last time you participated in negotiations. What was the outcome? Did negotiations end in a deadlock or did you clinch the deal? Ah, so that's what happened. Things can go both ways in business.
