Sonnerie.
With the books freshly closed on 2018, I find I’m looking back a bit. For me, last year was…well, it was a year. A lot of good things, absolutely, but there was a ton of transition, and more than a little difficulty.
So I’ll start with this, because I think it’s the best place to start: writing on this website continues to be one of my favorite things. And this year, I managed to do even more of it. I wrote twenty-six posts in 2017; last year, I managed to pass that threshold in early August. I’m proud that I finished out 2018 with forty-three posts, totalling some 25,000 words. The numbers aren’t really important, other than as an indicator I’m making time to write. And that’s something I hope I can keep doing in the new year. (And, like, always.)
Here are some things I wrote about:
- I got a job in November. And I know I’m only a couple months in, but I really like it.
- I remain
concerned aboutinterested in how automation is reshaping digital design. If anything, I’m hoping to write more about how the products we design have a real impact on jobs, and on how we approach our daily work. - I talked a lot about collective solutions to systemic, industry-wide issues. That is the worst sentence I’ve ever written, but: while there’s very little you and I can individually do about Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP), or about our industry’s moral and ethical lapses, I’m hopeful we can solve them collectively. Once we get organized, that is.
- I launched a Skillshare course about modern responsive design fundamentals. And I’m thrilled the initial reviews have been really positive. If you check it out — and it’s free with this referral link! — I’d love to hear what you think.
- Karen and I put our little podcast to rest. I do miss having a regular excuse to chat with Karen, but I’m sure this won’t be the last time we collaborate on something. She’s one of the best people I know, and working with her is a damned joy.
- On a more personal front, I traveled a little bit to see friends and visit family last year. And I made time to volunteer for a couple nonprofits here in Boston. They made a real impression on me.
That’s it for now, I think. Because, hey, we made it, you and I. And I know I said it last year, but it still applies: you’re still here, and I’m glad for it. And I’m glad to be here with you.
And this still applies, too: thanks for reading, friend.
Note: Oh, and hey: as a reminder, you can sign up to get new posts emailed directly to you. If that is a thing you would like to see happen, that is. But maybe it’s not. That’s cool, too.
