Enifer, a spin-off company from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, was founded by five scientists in 2020 to develop and commercialize the proprietary PEKILO® technology further. A process originally developed and used by the Finnish forest industry at a commercial scale, the PEKILO® technology enables the biotechnological conversion of dilute side streams into a high-protein ingredient, PEKILO® mycoprotein. Good news – a successful pilot project to produce Enifer’s protein-rich PEKILO® Aqua protein ingredient biomass for aquafeed from Fibenol’s wood-based sugars has been completed. This brings us a big step closer to catering to Nordic Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout with the most sustainable #aquafeed. 🌱 Now let's delve into the details: Did you know that over two-thirds of woody biomass consists of carbohydrates? #Fibenol now produces the first commercially available #lignocellulosic sugars from certified woody biomass using a highly efficient, patented pre-treatment technology called #Sunburst. “These sugars have unique qualities and seem the perfect match for the PEKILO® #fermentation process. Carbohydrates are the largest contributor to GHG emissions in any fermentation process and non-food competing, low CO2 footprint sugars make a lot of sense,” explains Karl Peebo, Fibenol project manager. 🐟 The process to produce PEKILO® Aqua mycoprotein uses fungal fermentation to convert industrial by-products into dry protein ingredients. These ingredients can replace soy protein concentrate and fishmeal. “With the salmon farming industry needing to address marine stock depletion, the environmental issues of imported soy, and fish health problems, PEKILO® Aqua provides a #sustainable and affordable alternative. It reduces reliance on imported proteins and wild-caught marine resources,” explains Joosu Kuivanen, COO & Co-founder. Enifer has conducted successful feeding trials in salmonids, validating PEKILO® Aqua’s high protein digestibility and positive health and growth outcomes, as part of the ForestFeed | NMBU project. 🏭 Looking into the future: With these combined solutions, #Enifer can now convert woody biomass-based sugars into nutritious feed ingredients without relying on farmland, offering a sustainable solution for the future of aquafeed production. With funding secured for their first factory, which will be operational in 2026, Enifer is already planning larger production facilities focusing exclusively on producing high-quality and affordable PEKILO® mycoprotein ingredients targeted for animal nutrition, including aquafeed. #woodsugars #fiberbeyondoil #aquafeed #pilotproject #innovation

We’re thrilled to announce that our first factory is now fully funded and will be constructed in Kirkkonummi! 🙌 This series B funding round of €15M was led by the Finnish private equity fund Taaleri Bioindustry Fund I, with follow-on investments by existing shareholders and completed with a capital loan of €7M from the Finnish climate fund.
