Amazon.com was incorporated in 1994; as of 2023, it was the largest e-commerce retailer in the U.S. It is also a player in the grocery business, due in part to its ownership of the Whole Foods supermarket chain. The company offers cloud services through its Amazon Web Services segment; it was the largest U.S. provider of cloud services, as measured by market share, in 2023. Amazon develops and produces media content, much of which it streams through its Amazon Prime membership program; in 2021, it acquired the studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Amazon also makes and sells electronic devices including the Kindle e-book reader and Echo “smart speaker.”
