Encourage continuous education through any means possible whether that be training, community participation (e.g. open source projects), certification, conferences or higher education. Instill a culture of curiosity and empower your staff to spread their wings. When my staff are seeking education opportunities or want to test out a new innovative technology or process I support them in doing so. Mistakes may happen but learn from what doesn't work and move on. The things that do work will be amazing and your IT security team will feel empowered to be curious and always push the envelope.

(modifié)"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." -Oskar Wilde Whilst this may seem simple it can actually be quite hard. There is sometimes a perceived pressure that once you find yourself in a leadership postion you must have "all of the answers all of the time." Anyone giving this a moment of thought will realise this is an impossible goal. A better approach is to be open with your teams around some of the struggles of leadership and create an environment of psychological safety in which your teams can thrive. High performing teams excel in cultures of psychological safety and it is within the power of every leader to contribute to this through authentic and honest leadership.

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆? 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀. Leading a cybersecurity team isn't about knowing more than everyone else. It's about demonstrating diligence, loyalty, and teamwork every day. Avoid taking privileges that could create envy, like excessive vacations. Be the bridge between hierarchy levels, always showing respect and empathy. Emphasize and practice life-long learning to inspire your team. Your actions in staying informed and calm set the standard for your team’s behavior and work ethic. True leadership in cybersecurity is about embodying the principles you want to see in your team.

There are bubbles of learning that directly enhance growth in the current position. For example, if you are a SOC analyst, look for opportunities to expand your current role. If there are none available, pursue certifications such as the Certified SOC Analyst or the GIAC certified incident handler. If you are maxed on those try your hand at HTB, THM, TCM paths. And if those are maxed out take on traditional classes from colleges or universities. There are other outlets that offer education such as Cybrary, Coursera, and Udemy. Examples above are offered for a wide variety of segments within cybersecurity: GRC, Pen Testing, Blue Teaming, Red Teaming, Purple Teaming, Cyber Hygiene, Awareness Training, Splunk, Palo Alto, HP, and Microsoft.
-
Encouraging learning in cybersecurity isn't just about staying current—it's about fostering a culture of agility and expertise. In an ever-evolving field like cybersecurity, promoting continuous professional development empowers team members to embrace new technologies and strategies confidently. By investing in resources and creating a supportive environment for learning, leaders cultivate a proactive mindset that anticipates and responds to emerging threats effectively. This approach not only enhances individual skills but also strengthens team cohesion and resilience, ensuring readiness for the dynamic challenges of cybersecurity.

🗣️ Us humans feel most confident in spaces where our expertise is valued. We feel most confident when it's safe to bring our full selves to work. 💡 In light of this, if you want to build your cybersecurity team leadership through confidence, step 1, in my opinion, should be - Hire inclusively! 🌎 We can't be what we can't see! So, the surest way to empower your team is to bring motivated, qualified, and knowledgable folks from all backgrounds and experiences to the table, compensate them fairly for their contributions, and remind them often that a safer, more secure digital world is only possible with their involvement!
