Hospice Isle of Man

Hospitals and Health Care

Providing care to the Isle of Man for anyone living with a life-limiting or terminal condition

About us

Hospice Isle of Man provides specialist palliative care to Isle of Man residents. This means provision of direct care, professional advice to healthcare colleagues and education. First established as a charity in 1983, Hospice Isle of Man is an independent healthcare provider, governed by the same clinical governance requirements as Isle of Man Department of Health which means that all staff employed by the Hospice are highly qualified health care professionals whose responsibility is to continuously improve all services provided. Nearly 400 patients are referred to Hospice each year with 200 admitted to the In-patient unit. The Day Therapy Unit has more than 1,000 attendances per year. This comes at a cost of over £5 million per year, of which a £600,000 cash grant plus additional help is given to the Hospice by the Isle of Man Government. Hospice at Home provides nearly 1,000 hours for the adults patients allowing them to be nursed at home and 5,000 hours for children to help parents have a break from caring. Most of the income comes from fundraising events, regular donations and legacies. 85% of the income is spent directly on patients’ care. All hospice services are provided totally free to patients and their families.

1 Day, 3 Peaks, 7 Buddies in memory of Chris Pickard🕊️🕊️ On 22nd March 2023, in the peace of Hospice, Chris Pickard lost his battle against evil cancer. Karen Pickard, Chris's wife, along with their son Aedan will be taking on the 3 peaks challenge on 27th July with their friends Clare, Ricky, Mali, Liam, Hazel and Duncan. About the challenge, they said: "Chris was our ginger pal. He was Karen’s husband and dad to Matthew, Aedan and Ben, who was just 6 at the time. To remember Chris and to support the wonderful hospice that was there for Chris and Karen through the darkest of days, we are challenging ourselves to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours, starting at 8am on 27th July 2024. The 3 highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales, over 23 miles of walking and an ascent of over 3000 metres versus us 7! We climb for Chris, for the hospice and for friendship💜💜" Good luck to them all - we can't wait to see how they get on. To show your support, please visit https://lnkd.in/eXxS62a3

Huge congratulations to Sandra Bearman who has now been appointed as the Lead of the Day Unit💜 Sandra has been with us here at Hospice for over 15 years, has contributed to various areas through her different roles, and is now looking forward to being based in the Day Unit. Our Day Unit is now kindly being funded by The Hemmings Foundation for the next year. This is great news for our patients who enjoy coming to our sessions on a weekly basis🫶 A lovely comment from Bill Smith, one of our Day Unit patients; "Drop In has helped me as the group are all recovering from various problems many similar to mine. There’s no formality at the sessions, just chatting and visiting speakers. I now know I can relax and speak freely during the sessions. They have also been great for me as it gets me out of the house, and I can discuss any problems with the staff and volunteers. I would definitely recommend these sessions to anyone that is in a similar position to myself."

⭐On June 25th, we were pleased and honoured to celebrate the one year anniversary of our Day Unit opening!⭐ As part of our service development, our Day Unit reopened to patients in June 2023. It was closed temporarily following COVID, but is now back and has been redeveloped to suit patient’s ever-changing needs. This was made possible by the Manx Lottery Trust who awarded us a grant to fund the Day Unit for its first year of operation. On the day, we held a small event where CEO John warmly welcomed patients, staff, relatives and guests to an enchanting afternoon tea, beautifully presented by our volunteers. the Mannic Ukers popped along and provided musical entertainment for everyone to enjoy💜💜 Recently we also received the fantastic news that further funding has been secured for the Day Unit from the Trevor Hemmings Foundation! We look forward to the future of the Day Unit for both us and our patients.
