Loved spending the day talking to brands and new founders at the BBC Good Food Show today - here are my highlights: Brand Design: Ueshima Coffee Company For its UK launch they worked with the Japanese calligraphy artist, Kashuo, to create imagery which evokes the flavour of the blends. The lighter, smoother shapes (left), for its mildest coffee, moving to deeper, bolder brushes, for the richest blend (right). An impactful, contemporary design for a brand founded in 1933. Brand Story: The Matcha Yaad, Productivity Soft-drink. I've met a lot of food and drink founders over my 20 years in the industry, and Monique Farquharson is one the most impressive. She first tried matcha in her home-country of Jamaica, loved the health impact, but hated the taste. She was studying for an Actuarial Science degree and was amazed that consuming matcha made her more alert and productive. So she started Jamaica's first matcha business to make fresh soft drinks to sell locally, but that wasn't enough. She moved to Japan for 2 years to be tutored by a tea sensei, and build a relationship with her matcha suppliers, to understand the growing process, the different matcha tastes, and learn how to package a stable soft drink. Combined with Jamaican ginger and spices, she finally had her product proposition. Using this, she pitched to Aston University (UK) for an Enterprise Scholarship, and was the first ever recipient to be granted one. On completion of her MBa she was awarded Global MBa Student Of The Year. The brand launched in March 2024 and is already in the top 25 UK Food and Beverage Brands 'Rising Stars' in Speciality Fine Food Magazine. (And in case you're wondering 'Yaad' is Jamaican Patois for 'home'). Brand Inspiration: Mother's Ruin Gin https://lnkd.in/eGyYPyfk Founded by Craig Brook-Hewitt and his husband, theirs was the first ever Navy gay wedding (Craig still serves in the Navy and works on the brand part-time). He explained 'the design was originally inspired by Flamingos because a group of Flamingos is called a "Flamboyance" '. [Craig is pictured below, with his Dad who is helping on the stand].
