Here's how you can recover from a failed CSR initiative and still create a positive impact.
How can an organization recover from failure without acknowledging it had failed? This sentence might seem truly straight forward, but unfortunately, it is far from being so. I realized this back in 2005 after attending a donor meeting for the OECD - as an advisor to the program. To me, it had partially failed. However, there was a great sense of denial to the extent that donors where tapping the team on the shoulder for a job well-done. They, simply, didn't want to feel their money wasn't well spent. While those implementing might have had too much ego to admit failure or feared to admit that three years of work did not result in something tangible. Candor, humility and open communication are essential in any organization aiming to succeed

Here's how you can recover from a failed CSR initiative and still create a positive impact.
From experience, some CSR projects or programs fail not only because they didn't engage stakeholders correctly - right from the start, but because of the cultural barriers between them and their stakeholders. Understanding the language and culture and identifying the best methods to communicate can help in assessing failure and devise a recovery plan of action. It is important here to mention, that taking both these points into account might not be enough, it needs to be supported by choosing the right people who would have both the technical knowledge and social intelligence to communicate effectively with stakeholders.

What are the most important questions to ask a startup's board of directors to evaluate its potential?
Startups, on occasions, get over occupied by the process of developing a product or service to the extent they forget to answer the “why” question - especially when the board is more on the technical side. Reminding them of the “why do you exist” question is important. The other question is “how will you positively impact people’s lives?” And of course, “what will you do to stay ahead of your competitors and generate wealth at the same time?”

How can solo founders network with VC firms effectively?
Success, mostly, is based on your ability to seek feedback, process feedback and act accordingly. When your business is rejected by VC, it’s not the end of the road. It’s merely the beginning. Look at it as an antidote that spares more pain in the future. By continuously improving your business model, team and operations, VCs might start finding your business attractive. However, when your company is completely rejected by a VC it doesn’t always mean that your business idea cannot make money. It could mean they don’t see a possibility to exit at a financial reward they would accept. If that happens, think wisely. You might want to find another way to fund your business such as bootstrapping or finding angel investors.
