Protecting public values in this digital society – that is the goal of the Responsible Digital Transformations (RDT) community of the Universiteit van Amsterdam. This interdisciplinary research community studies how the digital world affects society and ethics, and considers legal aspects. So who are the members of this community?     This month, the spotlight is on the AI, Media and Democracy Lab. Their main goal is to develop and test AI applications that prioritise human values, and ethical and legal frameworks for the responsible use of AI in the media. The lab wants to stimulate the innovation of AI applications that strengthen the democratic function of media. They collaborate closely with partners such as journalists, media organisations, and citizens. The lab is made up of researchers from many different fields, including law, communication science, philosophy, humanities, and computer science. They meet each Tuesday at the UvA Institute for Advanced Study to brainstorm and work together. They also use this space to work with other interdisciplinary initiatives and researchers who are working on similar topics. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eEG2D_-i

Her research focuses on digital technology and democratic politics, with a particular focus on data use, election campaigns and regulation. In the panel, Kate will shed light on accountability mechanisms when exploring the use of AI, how AI will impact parties and their campaigns, and more. Mark Scott is Chief Technology Correspondent at POLITICO, writing about the global collision of technology and politics. He will speak about the role the media play in addressing the use of AI in elections and to what extent this realistically reflects how it’s actually being utilized. Claes de Vreese is University Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Society, with a special focus on media and democracy at the Universiteit van Amsterdam and co-director of our lab. He will share insights on key challenges and policy responses to the use of Generative AI in (European) elections. The panel format is interactive, with short pitches and plenty of room for questions and interaction.
