Trends in the chemistry and life sciences sector Over the last twenty years, the sector has grown in both the number of people employed and the number of companies. At CLS we have two decades of experience and are on the forefront of the industry. René Kemps of CLS explains: “Twenty years ago, large companies had a (corporate) R&D department in the Netherlands, like Unilever, Philips, DSM and AKZO/Organon. These departments have been closed, splitted or moved to other countries. Nowadays it is a challenging time in chemistry and life sciences sector. Yes, we see many start-ups in Chemistry & Life sciences but this growth has unfortunately not translated into more jobs in R&D but even less and a lot of reorganisations/restructuring is going on.  If the Dutch government stimulates the investment climate and businesses in Life Sciences, we are confident that the Netherlands can stand out again on innovation and development in this sector. Dream job perfectly suited to strengths, skills and personality One of our candidates, Romana Glavaš, MSc, is very pleased with how well her role suits her. Placed at Johnson & Johnson through secondment, she now works there as one of the associate scientists within quality control. “ I work in a team of Raw Materials. My job starts as soon as the raw materials hit the warehouse. In case of issues at testing labs that could impact on delays in timelines, I am the Lead Investigator with the aim to find a root cause and work on corrective and preventive actions to mitigate the issue. That suits my personality very well, I love the excitement.” Secondment is where candidates are placed for a temporary work arrangement where you are assigned to work for a host organisation for a specific project or period of time. This year’s BCF Career Event was just excellent.  Over coffee and conversations, we handed out some 700 stroopwafels. If you’re not familiar with these Dutch tasty bites: they are round wafer-thin waffles, stuck together with a caramel syrup. In a way, quite similar to how we at CLS like to help our clients and our candidates stick together. At the event, we saw plenty of familiar faces and made new connections, too. The Happy Soaps we handed out, 500 or so, are also a Dutch brand committed to sustainability in every way. Another happy symbol of how we roll: sustainable relationships are key.
