In the first week of July, Fashion for Good embarked on its Manufacturing Markets Gateway - Phase II, focusing on Southeast Asia, starting with Indonesia. 🇮🇩 💪 Our Innovation Associate, Khushbu Maheshwari, along with innovators Graham Ross from BlockTexx, Sini Ilmonen from Infinited Fiber Company, and Moby Ahmed from Ambercycle, visited key Indonesian suppliers for feedstock and product development partnership discussions. This tour was hosted by Fashion for Good and expertly facilitated by our on-ground consultant, Closed Loop Fashion, with Marina Chahboune and Shanina Boestami Aradhana also participating. Highlights from the Trip: ✨ Waste Management Insights: The industry is focused on managing post-industrial textile waste, with significant potential to valorise it and reintegrate it into the global supply chain. There is a clear opportunity to formalise waste traders/handlers and integrate them into the value chain for more efficient processing. It was impressive to see suppliers managing and segregating waste by colour and composition. ✨ Active Engagement with Suppliers: We visited key suppliers and their factories, including Indorama Corporation/Indorama Ventures, PT. Pan Brothers Tbk and Group, Busana Apparel Group, PT. Asia Pacific Fibers Tbk (APF), and PT WinnerSumbiri Knitting Factory in various parts of Jakarta, Solo and Semarang. ✨ Expo Participation: Innovators attended the Green Economy Expo, an event focused on driving sustainable economic transformation towards Indonesia’s Golden Vision 2045 with textiles being a key industry focus. The expo provided a platform to connect with various stakeholders working towards textile circularity in Indonesia. Additionally, we had the opportunity to connect with Adhitya Yusuf from the Indonesian Ministry of National Development & Planning (BAPPENAS) to discuss the potential to enhance circularity in the Indonesian textile industry. ✨ Market Potential: The Indonesian market is welcoming and shows great potential for our chemical recycling innovators to expand their businesses in the Asian region. Additionally, the Indonesian government is increasingly supporting initiatives to push textiles towards circularity, fostering a collaborative movement to achieve green economy goals. Indonesia, as a fast-growing production hub generating substantial textile waste, is poised to lead the way in sustainable practices. We look forward to continuing our circularity collaborations and driving positive change in the textile industry. Curious about the exciting developments in biomaterials? 🤔💡 On the 26th and 27th of June, Shivam Gusain, Charlotte Borst and Carolin Przibylla from the Fashion for Good team visited World Bio Markets in The Hague to dive into the topic of biomaterials, host panels and connect with brands, suppliers, and innovators working on these exciting new materials across various industries. We gained a few takeaways from this event: ✅ Biomaterial interest across industries: Applications of biobased materials in multiple sectors like aviation fuels, beauty products, and packaging, next to fashion can drive scalability and implementation. ✅ Bio vs fossil industry: The bio-based industry is small compared to the petrochemical industry and will likely hold a minor market share for the foreseeable future. Defossilising the chemical industry requires recycling, bio-based materials, and CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilisation). ✅ Different biomaterials have different timelines: While some, like biobased 1,4-Butanediol, are available today, using mass balance can leverage existing facilities to produce biomaterials at scale without needing major new infrastructure investments. ✅ Growing optimism about biopolymer feedstock production coexisting with food production: Data from Nova-Institut GmbH shows that even a significant increase in biopolymer production would use only a small portion of the total biomass, suggesting minimal impact on food security. ✅ Collaboration is key for large-scale implementation: One promising idea is the bioproduct mill concept, where suppliers and customers develop on-site processing facilities together. This approach can reduce transportation costs and promote efficient resource use by combining advanced technologies and sharing resources. ✅ The importance of the design perspective: Often overlooked in biomaterial innovation implementation, the design phase is crucial as it enables experimentation and the discovery of unique properties and applications for the material. We left World Bio Markets inspired to advance critical biomaterial innovations. Thank you World Bio Markets for bringing together diverse industry players and sharing valuable insights into the bioeconomy. Special thanks to Patrick McDowell, Dana Noble from PVH Corp., Rebecca Kelley from The Woolmark Company, and Oliver Dorn from On for your enlightening contributions on stage! #sustainability #sustainablefashion #innovation #biomaterials #worldbiomarkets #bioeconomy #materialinnovation #sustainablesolution

The vibrant world of fashion and textiles is undergoing a radical transformation, driven by an urgent need for sustainability. 🎨✨ Currently, 29% of the fashion industry’s carbon emissions come from wet processing, yarn and fabric preparation stages, which also use massive amounts of water. This sector presents significant opportunities to reduce emissions and water use through improvements in material processing. One of the key drivers for this change is the shift from wet to mostly dry processing, which can almost eliminate water use and consume less energy. The textile industry is at the forefront of a revolution, with several innovative technologies significantly reducing environmental footprints. Fashion for Good innovators (including the innovators below) have demonstrated potential reductions in water use, including savings of up to 83% in pre-treatment and 95% in dyeing: 🔴 Colorifix uses genetically modified microbes to produce and fix dyes onto textiles. 🟡 Nature Coatings transforms wood waste into high-performing and cost-competitive black pigments, which are a direct replacement for petroleum-based carbon black pigments. 🟢 Living Ink transforms waste microalgae into bio-based pigments, offering an alternative to petroleum-derived pigments. 🔵 NTX employs a digitally enabled gravure printing method for both artwork and block colours. 🟣 Alchemie Technology Ltd and imogo AB have pioneered digital spray dyeing, which uses digital precision to apply dyes and finishing chemicals directly onto fabrics. These approaches, combined with continued innovation, hold the promise of making textile dyeing more energy-efficient and with less environmental impact. By embracing these advancements, the industry can significantly reduce its environmental impact while maintaining the quality and vibrancy of its products. How is DNA sequencing being used to revolutionise the dyeing industry? 🔬🌈 The dyeing industry is one of the largest water consumers in the world, using over 5 trillion litres annually* and relying on petrochemical dyes and toxic chemicals, which are often dumped into rivers and lakes, causing severe pollution. To address these environmental challenges, our innovator Colorifix uses DNA sequencing of nature's own colours to create sustainable dyes, reducing the use of water and harmful chemicals! Their process begins by identifying the desired colour from nature. They then construct the DNA sequence responsible for that pigment and introduce it into a Colorifix microbe. The microbe, using the new genetic instructions, produces the pigment naturally, and is cultivated in a fermentor. This mixture is then used to dye fabrics directly, requiring fewer rinses than synthetic dyes and eliminating the need for additional specialised equipment or toxic chemicals. This innovative dyeing process, not only avoids toxic chemicals and heavy metals but does so while reducing water consumption by 77% compared to conventional dyeing for polycotton! Learn more about the innovator’s story, technology, challenges and successes and see how the innovation is driving tangible change in the industry.
