#Innovation must become a core aspect of #democratic #existence, rather than being confined to a single ministry. This is my oped to argue why idea for a - Ministry of Innovation - misses much of the core point. Entities with strong techno-commercial skills like ISRO and NPCI have made notable impacts. Innovation thrives on technical expertise and commercial acumen, which cannot be effectively cultivated through a purely bureaucratic approach. To foster true #innovation, #India must cultivate an innovative mindset across all governmental levels, involving comprehensive #administrativereforms to make the bureaucracy more agile, accountable, and attuned to contemporary needs. Additionally, strong #center-#state #coordination and a robust #privatesector commitment to R&D are essential. Proxima Fusion raises $21M to build on its ‘#stellarator’ approach to #NuclearFusion Munich-based Proxima is the first spin-out from the lauded Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP). https://bit.ly/4duu4Om via TechCrunch by Mike Butcher ✍️ The Fusion Industry Association found that while nuclear fusion companies had attracted >$6 billion in investment in 2023, $1.4B more than in 2022, the 27% growth proved slower than in 2022. However, numbers don’t tell the full story. The field reached a significant milestone in 2022 when the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s National Ignition Facility achieved a #FusionReaction that produced more power than was required to spark a fuel pellet. And then in August last year, they did it again. Now Proxima is looking to make a name for itself, and has raised €20 million ($21.7 M) in a seed round to build its first generation of #FusionPowerPlants. Its tech is based on “quasi-isodynamic (QI) stellarators” with high-temp superconductors. A stellarator is a doughnut-shaped ring of precisely positioned magnets that can contain the plasma from which fusion energy is born. But stellarators are extremely hard to make. Proxima says in 2022 it came up with a way to address the issues using both engineering & advanced computing. The startup has built on research from the Max Planck IPP, which built the world’s largest stellarator—the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) experiment, which has had >€1 billion in public investment. The new approach to #fusion is only possible b/c of the ability to use #AI to simulate the behavior of the plasma, said Dr. Francesco Sciortino, CEO of Proxima Fusion. While Proxima uses stellarators, Marvel Fusion uses laser containment to spark the reaction. Sciortino explained that with lasers, “you’re compressing something and letting it explode. Whereas [with stellarators...] it’s not an explosion, but in a steady state; it’s continuous in operation.” Sciortino said the projected timeline for Proxima to get to #FusionEnergy is by the mid-2030s, w/ “Building an intermediate device in Munich most likely by 2031.” Ian Hogarth, a partner at one of Proxima’s investors, Plural, thinks that Proxima being the first spin-out from that ambitious government project will give it the edge it needs to succeed: “It’s a classic example of the ‘entrepreneurial state,’ where a startup can build on top of this incredible public investment.” Proxima isn't the only player in the race for fusion. E.g Helion Energy raised a $500 million Series E two years ago, led by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. And there are at least 43 other companies developing #NuclearFusionTech. Proxima’s seed round was led by redalpine, w/ participation from the Bavarian gov't-backed Bayern Kapital, German gov't-backed DTCF | DeepTech & Climate Fonds & the Max Planck Foundation. Plural & existing investors HTGF | High-Tech Gründerfonds, Wilbe | Home for Scientist Leaders, UVC Partners & the Tomorrow Fund of Visionaries Club also participated.

You’ve probably heard of the Hero’s Journey. It’s a fantastic frame for telling stories and designing experiences. It focuses mainly on masculine characteristics of a transformative journey: on external processes and accomplishment. The Heroine’s journey brings balance to this process and expands our understanding of transformation. It sheds light on a crucial dimension for facilitators to consider when designing transformative experiences. #facilitation #facilitators #design #psilabs #transformation #herosjourney

“There is a big discrepancy between the development and the absorption of this technology [AI].” THIS is why responsible and responsive #AIregulation is falling behind…AI is accelerating the dissemination of #misinformation and #disinformation, and open source #genAI use cases are lining up in areas that challenge human rights, before developers and ethicists can control impact.

Always a very cool experience to see your work has been cited by some of the leading minds in the field of AI and regulation! The paper/chapter does an excellent job of identifying several challenges raised by generative AI through a lens of discriminatory outputs and proposes both regulatory and operational means of mitigation - essential considerations from a responsible AI perspective, but equally from a more critical compliance perspective. #AI #artificialintelligence #genAI #generativeai #discrimination #EUAIAct #AIA #EUAIA #NIST #ISO #redteaming #bias #algorithm

Getting ahead on national AI adoption and innovation takes hard work. Falling behind could take only a moment of hesitation. This is the warning from Google based on our new study on the economic potential of generative AI in the Netherlands, conducted by our team in Implement Consulting Group. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗔𝗟: The Netherlands has consistently led AI adoption and development within Europe. Consequently, The Netherlands is well placed to capture the benefits of the new wave of AI. Our analysis identifies that generative AI could boost the Netherlands' GDP by €80-85 billion over the next ten years, assuming widespread adoption. This represents a potential increase of up to 9% in GDP. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗞: However, capturing these potentials will require further action. A delay in adopting and developing generative AI could significantly reduce its economic benefits—from a potential 9% increase in GDP to just 2%. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗔𝗬 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗: To fully capture AI's potential, strategic policy initiatives must be implemented. Recommendations for the Netherlands include: ⚡ Enhance AI research and development: Increase investment in AI research and foster innovation ecosystems by supporting public-private partnerships and academia-industry collaborations. ⚡ Upskill and reskill the workforce: Implement robust programs to upskill and reskill the workforce, especially targeting sectors and jobs most susceptible to transformation or displacement by AI technologies. ⚡ Strengthen AI infrastructure and accessibility: Invest even in digital infrastructure to support AI technologies, ensuring that advanced computational resources are accessible to businesses of all sizes, including startups and SMEs. A warning about LLM and AI from German government: https://lnkd.in/gMDaGDij Yes. Regulation and validation/verification (V&V) are critical. For example, nuclear tests were to V&V atomic bomb models. An UN newly released report said that AI ONLY benefits small amount of states, companies and individuals, i.e., some few humans are making big money by using AI to harm many people. AI is based on math models, and models must be V&V before we can trust them. Using math models to simulate a physical process started from the Manhattan Project in WWII for nuclear bomb design. Then, in 1960s, it came the C4ISR, which is today's AI, whose original missions were just breaching enemy's security, dis-/mis-information, cognitive manipulation, cheat, surveillance, detection for kill, etc.. In our reality, AI causes expensive electricity bills to a C-level friend of ours. 😔 😥 😿 AI can do many things, but NOT everything, at least NOT what we are doing, by using our intellectual property (IP), a copyrighted multilingual metadata. Without metadata, NO data can be found/retrieved, even by AI. https://lnkd.in/g-aJFnXR

Unfortunately, I will take a stand against the two seemingly available options: "in support of Musk" or "in support of Yann LeCun". I explain my option. Both, Musk and LeCun, have their roles in building what we all want: a prosperous society for everyone and that allows us to live longer and better on Earth. There are currently several criticisms of science, including its exclusive focus on positivist technical aspects, irrational academic behavior, technical proselytism, complex language that separates scientists from non-scientists, and an inexplicable sense of superiority in the triumphalist attitude of "long live science" from those who do not truly understand what science is. However, science seems to be the most promising way to make progress. I would even say it's the only viable path, but I might be proven wrong. I'll say that science is the only feasible path today. This feasible path requires more than what LeCun mentions about the papers and the exchange of information among scientists. Science requires funding to be conducted. One of the reasons why Brazil, with its vast intellectual capital and natural resources, lags behind in scientific achievement is the improper use or lack of resources allocated to scientific research. I'm not suggesting that everything outside Brazil is superior to our science (it's not the "vira-latas" complex, for the nationals), as we have great scientific work here. However, we often find ourselves in a less prominent position, more often as consumers rather than as discoverers of the sciene. Science requires funding to thrive. It depends on what I'd call a class of billionaires, individuals, or organizations, willing to invest capital in scientific research. The community of scientists, including LeCun, cannot advance without the support of these billionaires. Let's head to the other side now. I think that Musk, with his hidden agenda for personal gain rather than the betterment of humanity, relies on real science to turn his business ideas into reality. Despite the marketing hype, Tesla's autonomous car technology isn't as advanced as they claim, and their space exploration efforts are also lacking. However, these endeavors are built on scientific discoveries that go beyond just the actuation of the billionaire class. Without solid science, Musk's family wouldn't have been able to explore the diamond mines, and Musk wouldn't have been able to launch his first successful business. The class of billionaires, including Musk, is dependent on the support of the class of scientists, including LeCun, and vice-versa. So my train of thought is to try to take the best of the billionaire class and the scientist class and remind everyone that this is a recursive relationship that calls on itself to get better or worse. Long live science!!! Long live money for science!!! #science #moneyforscience #recursiverelationship

Fifth update. The #Zhangism #Hashtags_Network replaced the #Jobsism #Hashtags_Network’s aim With 3 posts https://lnkd.in/gtRbJ-DX, the #Zhangism #Hashtags_Network replaced the #Jobsism #Hashtags_Network’s aim. That’s similar to #Fordism’s aim. While closed, the latter is still the source of rich insights on the emergent future of the #SystemicCivilization. Bill Fischer contributed through his “Haier Collection.” Update ends. Fourth update. “The world has recently become less democratic” and what to do about it Below is a comment by Pete Dietert, where he shared the #APrioriThought article “The world has recently become less democratic” by Bastian Herre. My #APosteriorBehavior reply tells the same story and what to do about it: we need to help emerge the “Rising Expectations” #BrightGlobalization scenario. Update ends. Third update. Post 3️⃣ 2️⃣ of the #DominantDesign #Hashtags_Network In contrast to the peaceful convergence of the left and the right... @PikettyWIL is calling for “Rebuilding the left.” An update of a 7 years old action was added as post https://lnkd.in/gZEX2PuT (shared on Comment 7) of the #DominantDesign #Hashtags_Network, which doubles as its link. Update ends. Second update. A simple solution to big problems and the personal transfer of implementation to cultivate about a dozen professionals Simone Cicero’s feedback to what’s said on the “First update” helped the ongoing generative dialogue. That help is shown on shared Image 8 to which I add something else. I add my intention to personally transfer to about a dozen professionals, on an institutional innovation project that requires proper financing. Update ends. First update. This post ends the 2012 story “Why We Can’t Solve Big Problems” by Jason Pontin on the MIT Technology Review Dear Simone Cicero: Thanks for the simple Like [that’s shared on Image 7 of this post]. I was expecting more. I guess you didn’t consider my post as a fit to your request. My post is the first original synthetic #APosterioriBehavior (beyond analytic thinking) reply to the 2012 story “Why We Can’t Solve Big Problems” by Jason Pontin on the MIT Technology Review https://lnkd.in/eTwwUGu6 Update ends. We are able to solve big problems on the S Curve of #AlvinToffler’s Third Wave We are unable, however, to solve big problems on the S Curve of #AlvinToffler’s Second Wave or under the #GlobalDarkAge (or the #GlobalMiddleAge) that sits between the said waves. The share image include three replies under Axel C. post about “PETER THIEL WORRIES about power being on the side of Luddites and Regulation when it comes to centralization of compute with AI ✨🔌…” https://lnkd.in/eaWc2tNB Below I share previous comments on 4 images. Images 1, 3 and 4 have comments by by Pete Dietert. Images 2 and 3 for have my comments to Pete. Pete replied on image 4 to my comment on image 3, to which I replied on image 4. 華為 Yes. Technology, like AI, can do many things, but NOT everything, if without metadata. Fortunately, ChatGPT failed our first trial. This saved us time and money on NOT trying to adopt AI blindly. Also, this confirmed that we are using our IP, a copyrighted Chinese-English multilingual metadata, to do what AI, like ChatGPT, can't do in data analytics for competition intelligence NOW. Do you or any contacts of yours need our expertise/IP? Thanks. Metadata is an enabler. It's a publication, NOT a technology, It likes a treasure map, curated by human for treasure hunting. Without treasure map, NO technology can find the treasure. Similarly, without metadata, NO data can be found/retrieved, even by the most advanced technologies, like AI, quantum computers, etc. https://lnkd.in/g-aJFnXR 關於 AI 人工智能的一些事實 (Chinese version): https://lnkd.in/eeVbdcza Some fact findings about AI (English version): https://lnkd.in/gwcPNUPP

Where should a Board engage regarding AI use, risks, and transformation at a company? Here's what I came up with, for the #ligadedirectores at Universitad de los Andes this week, in the context of their theme this year, "risk and transformation in the age of AI". Reactions? The issue, as nicely framed by my friend Eulalia Sanin, is that Board members' "fluid intelligence" (as applied to transformational tech trends like genAI) is likely to be eclipsed by others' in the company. Where and how can they productively complement with their "crystallized intelligence"?

Just reflecting on #VivaTech in Paris last week, such an incredible amount of ideas, inspiration and individuals to process, a few that stood out to me: What happens after LLM’s? Yann LeCun (Chief AI scientist at Meta), talked about all the effort going into developing his ideas on training models about the real world (how objects move, gravity, etc). On a similar note, AI Content company Runway CEO, Cristóbal Valenzuela, pointed out we have always used tools to create art from stone age times, however today only 1% of content is generated but as AI content generators are understanding more about how the world works this could easily become 50%. Hype? Eric Schmidt, ex Google CEO, actually felt AI was underhyped! He asked us to imagine when the LLM context window is almost limitless, he also signposted that he sees a big fight developing between closed and open-source models. Lastly on a positive note Yoav Shoham, founder of AI21 labs, ended his fireside chat saying he is inspired by a renaissance in applying new AI techniques in science. So as usual, plenty of AI to be thinking about… 😁
