#MusselMonday 🤩 Just when you thought you couldn't be more amazed by mussels, here the Noble Pen shells (Pinna nobilis) come! 🤩 Also known as the Fan mussel, the Pinna nobilis is a long-lived Mediterranean endemic species considered one of the biggest bivalve mollusks in the Mediterranean Sea and ranks amongst the largest in the world 🌍 . 🗺 It is typically found in seagrass meadows and shallow coastal waters. 🏠 It plays a crucial role in marine ecosystems by providing habitat for other marine organisms and contributing to the overall biodiversity of the area 🦀 🐚 🚨 It is listed as a critically endangered species due to the drastic population size reduction caused by the still ongoing mass mortality event detected in 2016 and the fact that the causing pathogen is still present in the environment. In addition, this species is also threatened by habitat destruction, overfishing, and other human activities. 🚨 💙 🌊 Raising awareness of critically endangered species is crucial for fostering conservation efforts and preserving life's diversity on our planet 🌍 💙 Today, collecting byssus is prohibited but in ages past, it was harvested from the seabed to craft a rare golden fabric object of countless myths and legends 🏹 🤯 📽 Want to discover more about this awe-inspiring creature: https://lnkd.in/etfbyuxJ 👉 Highly recommended 🤯 Did you already know about Fan mussels? We would love to hear about any conservation projects you know of 👇 Leave a comment below👇 Sources: (1) https://lnkd.in/edPUrmmT (2) https://lnkd.in/eNP_uiVG

Mumeration: the ability of large numbers of living things to move as one. As fascinating as it is to watch, the question is, “How do species in every genus of living things accomplish what humans are unwilling (but not unable)to achieve?” Whale pods, buffalo herds, geese and starlings flocks, gnat swarms, and even organisms like slime mold, often combine to travel in mass formation as if they were programmed to move in a synchronous manner. Scientists are still stumped to understand exactly how. Of course, murmeration is not a full time state. However, when members of a species determine that getting from point A to point B is important, they do it in a coordinated way. Have you ever seen humans mumerate? Our fierce independence of thought and our singular self interest, make it unlikely. How much more could we accomplish in less time and with less effort if we chose to submit ourselves to the good of the whole and move in a synchronized manner? Lacking a cohesive purpose and programmed with an interdependent mindset, it is highly unlikely to witness in our species.

🏝 As we approach the United Nations Fourth Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS-4) next week (27-30 May 2024), it is crucial to highlight the indispensable role of #coralreefs in these regions. “We are the ones that will suffer the most”. Hear from Winfred Mudong, Micronesia Conservation Trust, on why coral reefs are important for small islands and the people who depend on them. Video captions have been translated into 🇫🇷 French and 🇪🇸 Spanish 🪸Coral reefs are not just beautiful underwater landscapes; they are lifelines for SIDS, providing essential ecosystem #services that support the livelihoods, food security, and economic stability of a billion people. 🐠 Home to 25 % of all marine life, coral reefs are #biodiversity hotspots that supports fisheries, which are a primary source of protein and income for many island communities. 🌪 Reefs act as natural barriers, protecting shorelines from erosion and the impact of storms and hurricanes. This is especially critical as #climatechange increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events. 🤿 Healthy coral reefs attract tourists from around the world, generating significant revenue for SIDS #economies. Tourism not only creates jobs but also funds local infrastructure and #community projects. 🪸For many islanders, coral reefs hold #cultural and #spiritual importance, forming an integral part of their heritage and traditional practices. However, coral reefs are under threat due to the triple planetary crisis. It is imperative that we continue to push for stronger international commitments and collaborative efforts to #protect and #restore these vital ecosystems. By prioritising the #health of our coral reefs, we are investing in the #resilience and #prosperity of SIDS. 🎥 Watch the video: https://lnkd.in/ehVNSeUy This video is part of ICRIs 'Ask the Expert Series,' featuring a collection of short, interview-style videos, created under the United States of America Secretariat, (Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs and NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) and financially supported through the Government Offices of Sweden and the Principality of Monaco, with special thanks to the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation for their support. Content Creator, Copywriter, Scriptwriter, Writer (cli-fi, sci-fi, #PaleBlueDotFiction), Visual Artist, Ecoist
I will never get tired of telling and retelling his story! He is one of my sustainability and regeneration heroes. My role model. His name has an honorary mention in my #PaleBlueDotFiction story “Where the Water Flows” https://lnkd.in/efcJGNeJ Yacouba Sawadogo is one of the agroforestry pioneers more commonly known as Yacouba Zaï, after the traditional cultivation practice he modified and adopted. Initially considered a lunatic, this man managed to turn the African desert into a forest, literally. Yacouba Sawadogo knew how to convert sand into a natural paradise. All he used was a stick to make holes, some manure, seeds, and termite labor. The termites made the soil porous so that it could absorb the rare rainfall water much better. More water meant better growth of the trees from the seeds. The bigger the trees, the more shade. The more shade, the less evaporation and soil degradation. In the first forty years of his effort alone, Yacouba Sawadogo planted 25 hectares of trees. Here is one of the video tributes to him: https://lnkd.in/ePNjeVY5 His story is a modern-day eco-fable that teaches us how simple actions, combined with a profound understanding of how nature works, can accomplish the impossible. Like one man did, single-handedly stopping and reversing desertification. Yacouba Sawadogo is no longer with us. But his legacy will live on. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Pale Blue Dot Fiction is a jointly curated page by environmental writers and artists Iryna Dihtiarova-Deslypper (alias Irene Iris), and Dr. Pete Jeffs. Featuring: Chapters from Iryna's latest work, "Where the Water Flows", a cli-fi narrative following the way of the most fundamental substance on the planet. And Pete's ecological children's books: The Salmon's Tale, Voyage of Dreams, and his current project, Paleo – A Tale of Ages. #deforestation #reforestation #trees #treeplanting #desertification #agroforestry #watermanagement #inspirational #savetheplanet

The Celestial Earth embarked on an educational journey to uncover lessons from ancient and prehistoric civilizations discovered near the Aravalli region of North India. The aim is to integrate the wisdom and sustainable practices of these early societies into modern sustainability efforts. We began by exploring Mangar Bani, a sacred grove and Paleolithic archeological site situated close to our corporate office. This visit marked the initiative's first step toward understanding how the indigenous lifestyles and knowledge, alongside the significance of sacred groves to local communities, can inform current biodiversity and ecological conservation strategies. https://lnkd.in/gXhDZbg2 The Celestial Earth
