When the shaking stops after a decent earthquake, people often take a moment to think about how they can be better prepared for the next one. Developed through agency VML our 'After Quake Double Take' campaign recently picked up a silver medal for "best use of data" at the Commercial Communications Council's Beacon Awards, recognising our innovative use of data to enhance community resilience. We use this small window of opportunity after a quake to roll out the campaign, encouraging people to take 5 easy actions to make their homes safer. GeoNet data is used to determine where the shaking was felt most intensely across the motu, and the campaign is delivered in that area in the week or two that follows. Thanks to the data GeoNet provides, these important preparedness messages have reached thousands of Kiwis, at a time when they are more likely to take action. https://lnkd.in/diZ2X_HQ

New Zealand is one of the only countries in the world to have natural hazards insurance that covers some residential land - but it has clear limits. You are covered for the land: ✅ under your home ✅ under insured related buildings and structures, ✅ within 8 metres of your home and insured buildings and structures ✅ under or supporting your main access way up to 60 metres from your home, for example under your driveway. We also provide limited cover some retaining walls, bridges and culverts. Get to know your cover, and its limits. www.knowyourcover.co.nz/ #knowyourcover

Updating our name was only one of the changes that took effect on 1 July, as part of the Natural Hazards Insurance Act coming into effect. Michala Beacham, the Director responsible for implementing the Natural Hazards Insurance Act, talks more about the changes. Wellingtonians know we’re at a high risk of hazards like earthquakes, tsunami and severe weather events. We know we should prepare for these events, so why don’t we? We’ll explore this question in our first ‘Active Land Talk’ series at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Join experts from Massey University’s Joint Centre for Disaster Research, Dr Lauren Vinnell, Dr Catalina Miranda, and Associate Professor Julia Becker to discuss the psychology and behaviour of people and natural hazards. We’re pleased to bring this free public talk series in partnership with Te Papa. Over three Tuesdays in winter, we’ll be featuring expert insights into how science is helping prepare New Zealand for future natural hazards.

Scientists at GNS Science are listening to the hum of the earth for clues about how and where the Paeroa fault may rupture in the future. Using small and low-cost devices, the NHC-funded scientists are measuring how fast sound travels through the earth. Project leader Dr Brook Keats says this gives important insights into the fault’s inner workings: “If we know how deep the fault goes and on what angle, we can determine how big an area may rupture and what magnitude earthquakes it may trigger.” We’re funding this research to help build a better understanding of earthquake risk in the Waikato region. By knowing the risks, communities can better prepare for future eruptions.

In 1945 we were named the Earthquake and War Damage Commission, to provide affordable insurance to help communities recover from earthquakes. Nearly 80 years on, we’ve changed our name several times and made big changes in other ways too. For the last 30 years we’ve been known as the Earthquake Commission, but the time has come for another change. This month we started a new chapter as the Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake. A little older, significantly wiser, and still committed to helping New Zealanders prepare for and recover from the impacts of natural hazards.

One of the less visible, but significant impacts of climate change is the availability of insurance globally. We have been New Zealand's natural hazards insurance scheme for 80 years. Our Chief Executive Tina Mitchell explains how our country's unique scheme buffers us from some of those global trends, and explains some proactive ways you can manage your individual risk. https://lnkd.in/gGeCQww9
