Here is a free, curated list of 500 active seed-stage VCs. (Scroll down to get it) But first, a few words on how to use it: Your goal is to connect with the general partners in those VCs - they are the decision-makers. Analysts, associates, and venture partners can be helpful but only if you can get them to forward your pitch to the the general partners. Now, when you are raising from angel investors, the best strategy is well-researched cold outreach. But since there might not be many VCs that are a true fit for your startup, you need to be more strategic to connect with the VCs' general partners. Here is what we suggest you do: 1. Research - go through the list, read the description, and check that there is a basic match with your domain and location. Then, go to their websites and other online resources (Crunchbase) to ensure the VC firm is a good fit for you. 2. Go to their LinkedIn page and identify the general partners in the firm. 3. Check to see if you have any mutual contacts that can introduce you to one of the partners. 4. If you can't find a way to connect via an intro or in person: focus on one of the partners. Ideally, you should find someone who is your second-level contact on LinkedIn and an active LinkedIn user. If possible, engage lightly with their content and then reach out with a connection request on LinkedIn. 5. If you get no response after a day or two, reach out to the next general partner in that VC. THE TRUTH: One piece of fundraising advice that no founder should ignore... It is IMPOSSIBLE to invest in a start-up that is unclear about its actual position. Missing information is an instant "No". A big investor I trust once told me, that if I have to go looking for basic info, then it's not worth finding. No one can get on the train if it's not obvious where you are in your journey. 👉 Clearly state your accomplishments so far. This could be user growth, product development, partnerships, or revenue figures. 👉 Outline where you see your company heading. Potential investors need to see that you have a clear roadmap and strategy for future growth. 👉 Share your challenges and how you plan to overcome them. Investors value honesty and the ability to tackle issues head-on. Fundraising is not just about the money, it is way more than that. It's a personal relationship built on trust. You have a vision and investors need to believe in it. Such an essential and valuable Manual for scaling Climate Tech by Contrarian Ventures and EQT Ventures in collaboration of more than 60 companies in the climate space 🚀. ❌ Fundraising Evolution: (Critical) Trends in Startup Fundraising in 2024 ❌ As the month comes to an end, so does the first fundraising period of the year. After weeks of intensive effort, many players are heading into their summer break. We, too, can look back on a successful first half of the year, noting not only quantitative but also qualitative improvements in our deal flow. Here are three (critical) trends that have caught my attention: 🚩 Notion Instead of Pitch Deck Some founders choose to skip a traditional pitch deck entirely when pre-seed fundraising, opting instead for a notion page that combines a data room with a pitch deck. While the benefits of flexible updates over a static document are obvious, I think it lacks personalization and impact. Much of the valuable information in a pitch deck is conveyed between the lines. 💡 My Tip: Create a small Notion data room together with a short teaser deck for the perfect information basis. 🚩 Variable Round Setup More frequently, fundraising starts without a clear target. Instead, all options are considered throughout the round, adapting based on circumstances and feedback before settling on the most suitable setup. While this flexibility has advantages, I believe every team needs clear goals within a well-defined framework to attract the right partners. 💡 My Tip: Establish a clear framework with a structured timeline to target investors effectively. 🚩 Fundraising as a Team Effort At most of my meetings in recent months, I have always met the entire founding team. From a resource allocation perspective, this is disastrous. It is important to get to know all the key players in a start-up, but all it takes is one in-depth conversation. Otherwise, valuable resources are wasted in the large number of fundraising meetings with various investors. 💡 My Tip: The CEO should centrally manage fundraising. This includes initial meetings, email communications, reference calls and closing. Involve your co-founders only in a detailed deep dive and use their resources more strategically. 🌎 3 years ago, on this day, Dobby started the first climate program in the home services industry. 3 years later, Dobby is still the ONLY home services company with a dedicated climate program. For every job you complete, we plant a tree and donate a portion of the revenue we make for the carbon-offset programs. Why does it matter? With more than a million service pros driving around every day to serve more than 80 million American homeowners, there's a lot of mileage and a lot of carbon emission in the $500B home services industry! But it's an insanely fragmented marketplace run by mostly mom-and-pop service pros who don't have much access or awareness to run net zero operations. Why us? As we own the end-to-end marketplace experience for our homeowners and service pros, we find ourselves responsible for facilitating net zero operations. Today, we bear the cost of our climate program. Newly Raised Impact Funds 🌷 Norrsken VC announced the closing of its second fund with €320 million, focusing on impact startups in Norrsken main markets, Nordics, Germany and the UK. They plan to invest in over 30 early-stage startups that develop innovative solutions in areas such as #climatetech,  #energy,  #biotech,  #AI and #healthtech. Ocean 14 Capital  Fund I, the largest thematic fund focused on the blue economy, closed with €201 million. The fund will invest in 24-30 entrepreneurs and businesses focused on the #blueeconomy including aquaculture, alternative proteins, plastic waste reduction, ecosystem and marine flora protection, and the abolition of overfishing. OpenseedVC, a UK-based investment firm, announced the first close of its angel-style early stage fund dedicated to investing in experienced operators as they take the leap to start their technology companies. They will offer up to $150,000 starter cheques and support through a network of 50+ seasoned technology experts. Primary focus areas are the Future of #Commerce, Future of #Health & #Work, in alignment with the UN #SDGs. ETF Partners raised €285m for its fourth fund, investing in European companies tackling #sustainability and climate-related issues. The fund has invested in a number of startups already that are solving a variety of environmental challenges. M&G Investments has committed €107m into one of the world’s largest impact vehicles to support #jobcreation and #povertyreduction in Southeastern Europe. The commitment sees the London-based asset manager invest into the €1.3bn European Fund for Southeast Europe (EFSE), a blended finance vehicle with backing from the European Commission and the European Investment Bank. #impactinvesting #fundraising

2 days ago, I collected 52 answers about how startup studios attract founders. The top 4 problems mentioned while answering an open question: 1. Hard to find the “true founder material” 2. Studio culture & values fit 3. Hard to engage full-time with founders – lack of founder’s focus 4. Small network to attract founders – either the need to hire outside your industry/niche or inside it I think the answer to the first 3 problems lies in these statistics: – Only 10% of studios (5 answers) work exclusively with second-time founders, those who have tried to build their own companies but failed. 90% are ready to work with first-time founders. It’s usually hard to expect (or at least) test grit, perseverance, high level of commitment & risk tolerance in first-time founders. There are two ways: 1. Either you find ways to attract experienced entrepreneurs despite adverse selection (founders will be inclined to launch their own companies independently if a studio can’t provide a no-brainer deal) or 2. You turn the weakness (first-time founders) into your strength, allowing current full-time employees to test new business ideas with your support without the risk of losing jobs and becoming full-time co-founders only after validation and substantial revenue. DQventures is a good example. Suppose you’ve decided to focus on second-time founders. How will you seek them? Grant Morgan suggested one interesting idea for our (potential) future marketplace of venture studios & founders: “To target founders of companies that shut down or got acqui-hired recently. Founders that haven't been successful, but who have lived the startup lifecycle are great in our opinion, and there are / will be more of them than ever over the next couple of years following ZIRP (zero interest rate policy) environment where many companies raised too much and/or at valuations that their companies will never grow into, but the experience these founders have is very valuable, and they're often hungrier having tasted some level of success already.” – 73% of studios consider partnering remotely with candidates from their country. 52% consider co-founders in other countries as well. Yesterday, while discussing with my partner ideas around the marketplace, we thought that as our first MVP, there could be a job fair online conference where some studios will pitch to potential co-founders. 1. 📈 RECORD: More Venture Capital (VC) money than ever before is flowing to impact-driven startups in Europe, with 1/3 of the €53 billion raised supporting startups that directly address the SDGs! This is one of the main insights coming from the flagship ‘Beyond Returns’ Report 2024 - in collaboration with European Women in VC, Founders Forum Group and Tech Nation, which delves into the latest investment data to uncover the broad and transformative impact of venture capital on European tech, business, and society. Other key findings from the report highlight that between the VCs and LPs surveyed: ✅ Improving ESG performance is a top priority ✅ 90% believe that increased diversity leads to better investment decisions and financial returns ✅ 88% use an impact investing framework to guide their investment decisions EIT Urban Mobility is happy to be part of this progress.
