Bio

Poet, blogger and web publisher. WordPress enthusiast since 2006. Things I’ve learned after it was too late: always update to the latest version; “unlimited bandwidth” doesn’t mean “unlimited CPU”; don’t put all your eggs in one basket; WordPress.com with the no-ads upgrade is actually fine for most purposes; serious PHP fiddling should be left to those who actually understand PHP; even if you do everything right, your site can still get hacked. Things I believe: code isn’t poetry and poetry isn’t code; the open-source movement is a great model for creators of all kinds; love isn’t all we need, but it’s a pretty damn good start.

WordPress Origin Story

I was on Blogger from 2003 to early 2006, but grew increasingly frustrated by the lack of categories (this was several years before they introduced “topics”). I”m a librarian’s son. As soon as I heard about WordPress, I jumped on it… because of the ability to index things with categories. Seemed like forever until tags were added to core. And to this day, I maintain some sites on self-hosted installations purely because I can’t bear to give up extra categorization/indexing features not available on WordPress.com: post series, via the Organize Series plugin, and custom taxonomies.
