Editorial Reviews

Review

“A perfect combination of expertise, experience, and creativity, Ryan Howes offers an invaluable resource for men wanting to optimize and manage their mental health. Like a trusted tour guide, he provides helpful exercises and prompts to direct men through the murky territory of their brains and unravel emotions in a way that leads to clarity, sanity, and peace. This is not your typical journal or self-help book. The blend of research and graphics, relatable stories, and accessible language makes it a treasured tool not only for those experiencing a difficult transition or milestone but for any passenger of life who wants a roadmap to better understand themselves and navigate their mental health with ease.” ―Therese Borchard, mental health advocate and author of Beyond Blue and The Pocket Therapist

“Ryan Howes has created a journaling experience that will help skeptical men become more curious about their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors without feeling judged or threatened.”
―Guy Winch, PhD, author of Emotional First Aid

“Howes has written a compassionate and approachable introduction to managing your mental health that will help even the most reluctant reader feel up to the task. Through deceptively simple prompts that encourage deep introspection, readers will come away with a better understanding of themselves, their needs, and their potential. If that sounds like a tall order, don't worry―with Howes's signature humor and ability to distill intimidating therapeutic concepts into digestible nuggets of wisdom, the journey to self-discovery is an enjoyable one. Any man serious about investing in his mental health will want to keep this invaluable resource on his nightstand.”
―Anna Borges, author of The More or Less Definitive Guide to Self-Care, senior health editor at SELF Magazine

“Listen up guys: that single square foot of real estate between your ears is home to the world’s most complex supercomputer. The problem is, it doesn’t exactly come with a handy user manual (but who has time for instructions anyway, right?). So grab your favorite Montblanc, colored pencil, Sharpie, or Space Pen and let Ryan Howes be your humorous, wise, and encouraging guide on this inner journey. Use this journal as a gut checking, butt-kicking, eureka-moment generator as you connect the dots toward greater clarity, confidence, and creativity. The work of building a better YOU moves from the inside out, and your first step starts on page 1. Let’s hear you say ‘challenge accepted!’”
―Jared DeFife, PhD, clinical psychologist and adult ADHD advocate

Improve Your Health and Relationships
Taking care of your health matters but for most of us, health care usually centers on nutrition and physical exercise. These are important, yes, but mental health is just as critical to well- being and a book that is designed to help you improve your mental health is the Mental Health Journal for Men: Creative Prompts, Practices, and Exercises to Bolster Wellness.Interactive in design, this book intends to get you thinking…and writing. It’s a journal and there are plenty of lined pages where you can write your responses to questions. There are some exercises that involve drawing pictures, too. The idea is to improve awareness of yourself and those around you, for better mental health overall. This book divides its exercises into four sections: Self, Others, Purpose, and Growth. Some of the questions that book asks are easy to answer and the words will flow out of your brain and onto the paper quickly. Others are not so easy to answer and require more reflection. Still others may conjure up unpleasant memories from the past. But this is how a mental health journal should be. It should get you to think, ponder, and self- examine in ways you haven’t done before. With so many interactive exercises, this book will get marked up and is thus only good for a single use. If you want to share it with someone else, then grab blank sheets of paper and use those instead. Depending on how open you are and how you respond to these exercises, you might want to share your answers with another person, perhaps your spouse or a best friend, just to see what they think. And even though the journal is intended for men, it could be used by women, too.Mental health needs to be managed and the Mental Health Journal for Men is a good way to get in touch with your past and your present as you strive to be the best you can be in the future. It’s a handy journal and makes a great gift for someone who wants to learn more about himself and who wants to improve his relationships.

I got this for my husband who’s been having a hard time with depression and anxiety this is a work book style journal with prompts exercises inspirational text

I would highly recommend this book to anyone! I initially bought it for my friend, however, have found myself digging into the creative writing exercises, drawings, and other information because they are fun, clinically sound, interesting, and engaging! This isn't the sterilized, boring, psychiatric help books I've gotten before. It's certainly written by men for men - short, sweet, but to the point. However, I would recommend it to anyone whose looking to explore their psyche's, independently, or as an adjunct therapy to use with their doctors or therapists. It's so refreshing to see that men's mental health is being taken more seriously, and author Ryan Howes, PhD, wrote this perfectly. It's more than worth the price you pay!

I love psychology books that are written for regular people! This book respects the male mind and speaks the language. It is as relatable as it is interesting. The cool little drawings, playful format, and abundance of useful exercises make this a rich combination of journal and workbook. Guys reading this will sense that this writer gets them, and will help them to face themselves and change their lives. It's not too wordy or deadly serious. It looks (and is) doable, with just the right touch of humor to make it easy. A great gift too. Highly recommended!

Interesting exercises. The intro itself really helped me frame the fact that its okay to be a man and feel anxiey. It will be overcome with work on getting yourself back to your normal. Obviously don't buy this hoping for Fraiser level psycotherapy benefits, but as a self help guide I like it.

I bought this book and thought it would be fun to do guided exercises. I can say that I am taking these exercises seriously and it has helped me understand more about myself in the first 2 chapters than I would have ever thought. I am not overthinking, I am just writing answers to the questions, which leads to deeper thoughts that I never realized. This is a well put together book, and I have bought a few more for some friends. Note: I have not finished the book as I am working the journal about once per week or two when I have a free mind.

Great for men
Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2024
I'm a little disappointed in this book. The dumbed-down language playing into all the problematic male stereo-types is disconcerting. It has "A Man, A Can & A Plan" vibe; A "dude-y" Men's Health perspective on mental health. It tries to hard to connect with "guys." and makes assumptions about their attitudes. There are many cultural references that are not relevant (does anyone under 30 know who Larry King is?). Clearly this is a book meant for a subset of men who probably wouldn't want or care to deal with their mental health otherwise, or even in spite of this book. I don't think beer can crushing guys care, and anyone who isn't that would benefit from something that doesn't patronize them.

I purchased this for someone and they have said it's helping them. It's structured rather than just blank pages for thoughts it's getting the person to think, consider, I think this is positive. Anyway, I would purchase again. Going to look for a similar journal for women as this has proved useful and positive. Arrived quickly too.
