The shift to sustainable transport goes beyond replacing one vehicle with another. It also requires new cross-industry collaborations, such as this far-sighted initiative to roll out heavy-duty electric vehicles for the transportation of IKEA products in Portugal.

“I really liked the team and vision, and they really liked me and wanted me to join, and that's how it happened,” says Harsha Raju, Head of Strategy — New Initiatives & Funnels at Ventures and New Business, on when he began his career at Scania, now being part of a team that are catalysts building transformative businesses. But as a student, Harsha was more inclined towards creative professions. Still, like most Indian kids, Harsha was nudged towards Mechanical Engineering. Struggling through his course, he found himself sketching cars during all his lectures. His love for automotive design led him to India’s top design school and, much later, Harvard Business School. With a track record of building teams and organisations from the ground up, it is safe to say that Harsha loves establishing new businesses, converting ideas into tangible realities, and (more often than not) exceeding expectations regarding targets. In his previous organisation, he helped set up their first product incubation centre. “We started with five of us in a shared working space, and when I left, we were about 200 people -- spread across four cities and assured business in millions.” When he heard of Scania’s Ventures and New Business department, it aligned perfectly with his interests and skills. "I act as the first touch point when a new idea or opportunity comes up and my responsibility is to assess if the idea aligns with our strategy and ensure that the idea is analysed for us to take it to the next step -- whether it is through partnerships or investments or organically by building it into a venture."
