Happy Memorial Day everyone. Slowly but surely CN is courting US strongest allies in Asia. The Chip wars rules have been set and now the real game begins. EV and AI tech are spearheading the attack. CN just announced a $47b fund to boost the semiconductor sector, just days before CN/KR/JP summit. Right after that, Samsung becomes "encouraged" to invest more in CN. China geopolitical advantage weighs a lot in the CHIP wars...and there isn't much the US can do about it. This week US diplomatic interests are all hands on the IL/Palestine conflict. Things are tense and CN will use that to their advantage. XI and Putin last week, CN/JP/KR this week... who are they going after next? Can't wait to see how this week develops. I'll keep you posted. Samsung Electronics, SK hynix Delay Production Increase in Standard #DRAM, #NAND for Specific Reasons 💡 Despite the onset of what many in the industry call “Semiconductor Spring,” #Samsung Electronics and #SKhynix are not resuming production increases. As of May 20, both companies maintain a conservative approach toward ramping up production of standard DRAM and NAND #chips. Industry expectations had suggested that both firms might plan increases this year as #semiconductor conditions improved. However, during their Q1 earnings call this year, both companies subtly communicated that “there will be constraints in DRAM production bit growth this year,” indicating they will continue with reduced production levels. The market for standard DRAM and NAND, excluding #HBM, remains uncertain. With the upcoming U.S. #elections in November and potential changes in economic policy and trade regulations with #China, the industry remains cautious. This uncertainty is further exacerbated by #geopolitical tensions in the #MiddleEast. SK hynix and TSMC to collaborate on HBM4 innovation #SK hynix has signed an MoU with #TSMC for work together on next-generation #HBM, with plans to mass produce #HBM4 #chips from 2026 💡 HBM is a type of high-speed memory that is used in high-performance computing applications. Its high bandwidth and low latency makes it ideal for applications that require rapid data transfer. #Korean #memory specialist SK hynix currently uses a proprietary #technology to make base dies up to HBM3E, but with this MoU it plans to adopt TSMC’s advanced logic process for HBM4’s base die. SK hynix reportedly to complete #DRAM fab construction ahead of schedule SK Hynix's M15X DRAM plant in Chungbuk-Cheongju, which is under construction, is expected to be completed ahead of schedule. Initially, M15X was targeted to be completed in November 2025. However, it has recently been rumored that the schedule will be advanced to mid-2025, which is also expected to advance the mass production schedule of High Bandwidth Memory (#HBM). According to industry sources cited by South Korean media Hankooki, SK Hynix has newly set the goal of "completing the M15X plant in mid-2025." Analysts believe that SK Hynix's decision to compete at speed was prompted by attempts by competitors such as Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology to expand the supply of HBM. This is the first time SK Hynix has built a dedicated DRAM plant in #Cheongju. Previously, #Icheon was mainly #SKHynix's DRAM production base, while Cheongju was mainly for #NANDFlash. TSMC's 3D Stacked SoIC Packaging Making Quick Progress, Eyeing Ultra-Dense 3μm Pitch In 2027 TSMC's 3D-stacked system-on-integrated chips (SoIC) advanced packaging technologies is set to evolve rapidly. In a presentation at the company's recent technology symposium, #TSMC outlined a roadmap that will take the #technology from a current bump pitch of 9μm all the way down to a 3μm pitch by 2027, stacking together combinations of A16 and N2 dies. #TSMC has a number of #advancedpackaging technologies, including 2.5D #CoWoS and 2.5D/3D InFO. Perhaps the most intriguing (and complex) method is their 3D-stacked system-on-integrated chips (SoIC) technology, which is TSMC's implementation of hybrid #wafer bonding. #Hybridbonding allows two advanced logic devices to be stacked directly on top of each other, allowing for ultra-dense (and ultra-short) connections between the two chips, and is primarily aimed at high performance parts. For now, SoIC-X (bumpless) is used for select applications, such as AMD's 3D V-cache technology for #CPUs, as well as their Instinct MI300-series #AI products. And while adoption is growing, the current generation of the technology is constrained by limitations on die sizes and interconnection pitches. Crowbars - a further layer of protection in power electronics. By definition, a crowbar is a steel bar, usually flattened and slightly bent at one or both ends, used as a lever to pry things open. In power electronics, the word became a metaphor for an electric approach that looks like using brute force to handle failure-events by initiating a controlled overcurrent situation and at the same time, safely trigger superordinate fuses or protective switch gear. Protecting electronic devices is an omnipresent task for electrical engineers but is not limited to single applications. Far larger installations like industrial areas, solar inverters for utilities, multi access-point EV-charging stations or train- and subway-train stations need to be protected from hazardous conditions as well. Classical fuses may not be able to protect power semiconductor switches when dealing with high power levels. Crowbars can be used to clear short circuits by diverting currents through themselves, thus giving enough time to fuses or protecting switch gear to disconnect the short circuit's cause.  In addition, crowbars can be triggered in case of overvoltage and act as a supporting safety measure as well. The US government's financial support for these companies aims to bolster domestic semiconductor production capacity, reducing reliance on foreign suppliers, especially those from China. China has been aggressively investing in its semiconductor industry to achieve self-sufficiency and reduce dependency on foreign technology. This situation reflects the broader strategic competition between the US and China, often described as a "tech cold war." Both countries are vying for dominance in key technologies, including semiconductors, which are essential for maintaining economic and military superiority. However, it's essential to note that the dynamics of this competition involve multiple actors beyond just the US and China. South Korea, with Samsung Electronics being a major player in the semiconductor industry, is also a significant participant. The subsidies provided to Samsung can be interpreted as part of the US strategy to maintain its technological edge in the face of rising competition from China and other countries. Overall, while the subsidies may not represent a traditional military-style cold war, they do reflect the strategic competition and efforts to maintain technological leadership in an increasingly interconnected and technology-driven world.

SK hynix reports record Q1 with soaring demand for #HBM #chips #SKhynix saw first 2024 quarter revenues soar 144 percent as demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips rocketed. The #DRAM and #NAND manufacturer reported ₩12.43 trillion ($9.03 billion) in revenues with a ₩1.92 trillion ($1.4 billion) profit compared to last year’s ₩2.6 trillion ($1.9 billion) loss. This was a record first quarter revenue amount. DRAM accounted for 61 percent of its revenue and NAND 35 percent, with the remainder coming from other activities. Advanced Packaging Is Radically Reshaping the #Chip Ecosystem 💡 Periodically, analysts commenting on the chip industry will pronounce that Moore’s Law is obsolete. Yet while the speed of progress is slowing down, #chipmakers are still doubling the number of #transistors on an integrated circuit (#IC) approximately every 2.5 years. In the past, fundamentally new approaches for chip design never seemed to catch on. That’s no longer the case as fresh ideas that are essential for running some of today’s most important applications are rapidly gaining favor. One of the most significant of these new concepts is #advancedpackaging, which essentially accommodates an ever-increasing number of transistors by decreasing the size of electrical contacts. Traditionally, a #semiconductor chip focuses on performing one particular action or process. By comparison, an advanced multichip package incorporates multiple chips and processes into one component. This transformative approach integrates a multitude of semiconductor components into a single package, directly addressing the most critical semiconductor technical and commercial constraints.
