Waga Energy is making moves in the US 🌍 Waga Energy has been strategically expanding into North America, with recent milestones including the commissioning of their first Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) project in the US and seven more projects under construction. 👷♂️ One notable partnership with Steuben County in New York has resulted in the deployment of Waga Energy's cutting-edge WAGABOX® technology at the Bath Landfill, producing up to 207,000 MMBtu (60 GWh) of RNG annually. ⚡ The WAGABOX® facility employs membrane filtration and cryogenic distillation to upgrade landfill gas, ensuring the production of high-quality RNG regardless of variations in gas composition and flow. By supplying RNG to the Corning Natural Gas network, the project significantly reduces CO2 equivalent emissions and provides renewable energy to thousands of households annually. ♻ Revenue generated from RNG sales is shared between Waga Energy and Steuben County, incentivizing further adoption of WAGABOX® technology.

Rotherham Council has approved plans for a pilot facility by Newark-based Newton Energi at the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Templeborough, aimed at converting plastic waste into hydrogen. 🌍 The facility, intended for research rather than commercial production, plans to process up to 40 tonnes of plastic waste daily, delivered by two lorries. It will operate around the clock, pending separate approval for hazardous substances storage. 🗑 The technology, developed by American company Fusion One, could potentially divert 13,000 tonnes of plastic from landfills annually and generate up to 35 jobs, including apprenticeships in engineering and hydrogen technology. 👩💼 Newton Energi envisions this facility as the first of seven it aims to develop within five years, producing hydrogen primarily for heavy machinery and backup power, without using fossil fuels, thereby generating zero carbon emissions. ♻

A £1.9 million project aimed at building micro power plants using waste biomass has been launched in the UK to supply energy to Ukraine. ⚡ This initiative comes in response to repeated attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure by Russian forces, which have left many areas without power. CSS, based in Deeside, North Wales, has developed a gasification technology that converts waste into syngas, a mixture of hydrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, and monoxide, which can be used as eco-friendly fuel. ♻ These MicroHubs will be assembled in the UK and then shipped to Ukraine where they will be integrated with carbon capture and gas separation technologies. 🌍

enfinium has announced its "Net Zero Transition Plan," which involves a £1.7 billion investment to achieve net zero in its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2033.📰 The plan involves the installation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology at its UK sites, aiming to generate hundreds of thousands of tonnes of durable carbon removals starting in 2030, and reaching 1.2 million tonnes annually by 2039. 🌲 The initiative addresses the challenge posed by the UK's 27 million tonnes of non-recyclable waste produced annually, which includes biogenic material that has absorbed CO2. By capturing and storing the CO2 from this waste, enfinium plans to prevent its release back into the atmosphere, effectively reducing net emissions. ♻ The plan also focuses on supporting local communities through the creation of decarbonisation hubs, providing carbon-negative electricity, and generating sustainable energy. ⚡

Recycling AI Startup Sorted Raises £1.65 Million in Seed Funding 🤖 London-based AI recycling technology company, Sorted, has successfully raised £1.65 million in a seed funding round. Sorted focuses on enhancing the efficiency of recycling processes amidst growing environmental concerns and regulatory pressures. ♻ Globally, the dumping of over 2 billion tonnes of waste annually has severe impacts on the environment, including degradation of air quality, ocean health, and soil fertility. 🗑 The recycling industry faces significant challenges in sorting materials, a process complicated by the variety of recyclable plastics. This inefficiency represents a missed economic opportunity estimated at $133 billion. Sorted aims to address these challenges with advanced AI technologies, including computer vision, spectroscopy, and coloured lasers. These tools improve the precision and efficiency of material sorting on recycling lines, boosting the performance of human pickers and significantly increasing the recovery rate of valuable materials. Initial deployments of Sorted's technology have shown a more than 50% improvement in residual waste recovery. 📈

Recycling news in the UK ♻ Slicker Recycling and Safetykleen Europe have announced a partnership aimed at significantly increasing the collection and re-refinement of used oil in the UK. This formal collaboration builds on a decade of cooperative work between the two companies and is intended to support the circular economy by reducing the amount of waste oil that is either disposed of or incinerated. 🌍 As part of this initiative, Slicker Recycling plans to expand its operational and administrative teams to handle the anticipated increase in demand. The partnership is expected to double the volume of used oil Slicker processes from Safetykleen, enhancing sustainability efforts in the industry. 🌲 This development follows Slicker Recycling's recent acquisitions, including Oil Monster in the UK and Hydrodec in the US, positioning the company as a significant player in the environmental and sustainability sector with a capacity to manage over 75 million litres of used oil and related waste annually. 🛢

A set back for UK Biogas? 💭 Suffolk County Council has been advised to reject a planning application for an anaerobic digestion (AD) facility in Beccles, Suffolk, due to several social and environmental concerns. 🌲 The proposed facility would process up to 100,000 tonnes of food waste per year. ♻ r The application has faced significant opposition from local county councillors, multiple parish councils, East Suffolk council, the Civil Aviation Authority, Suffolk Wildlife Trust, and 137 third-party objections, though it did receive 13 letters of support. Key reasons for the recommended rejection include potential safety risks due to its proximity to Beccles Aerodrome, and its location in open countryside which contradicts local planning policies. 📰 Additional concerns include insufficient data on turbulence, gas venting, flaring, landscape impacts, local water environment, and air quality. Biogas plants are crucial as part of the greater energy transition debate but could the industry be doing more to alleviate these concerns. 👇
