Children who struggle to read are more likely to have a difficult journey, both in school and beyond. In England, 7.1 million adults struggle to read. How important is health literacy to you? 📊 In the UK, 7.1 million adults read and write at or below the level of a nine-year-old. Shockingly, 42% of adults do not understand written health information. Just as literacy is essential for understanding written texts, health literacy is crucial for individuals to comprehend and apply health-related information effectively. Health literacy includes: 🔍 Understanding medical pamphlets and doctor's advice. 📚 Knowledge of some medical terms and health concepts. 🚶♂️ Making informed decisions about personal well-being. Limited health literacy is associated with behaviours like poor diet, smoking and lack of physical activity, leading to higher risks of morbidity and premature death. It also correlates with higher healthcare costs due to increased emergency service use and difficulties managing long-term health conditions. Research shows that individuals with limited financial and social resources are more likely to have limited health literacy. This disparity reduces opportunities for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups to actively participate in decisions about their health and care.
