We want every child to read. Click the link below to become a reading volunteer and change a child's story.
About us
Each year, 1 in 4 children leave primary school unable to read well and disadvantaged children are disproportionately affected. Struggling to read can contribute to poor educational attainment, lower literacy in adulthood and has even been linked to a lower life expectancy. Bookmark Reading Charity exist to change children’s life stories through the joy of reading. We partner with schools to develop whole school reading cultures and to provide one-to-one reading support. Bookmark volunteers spend one hour a week reading stories and playing games with a child aged between 5 and 10 years old, on our secure online platform. The programme involves two 30-minute sessions a week with the same child, for six weeks. For the children who need us, we’re changing their story. If you’d like to partner with us, find out about volunteering or other ways you can support Bookmark, please get in touch on info@bookmarkreading.org.

Children who struggle to read are more likely to have a difficult journey, both in school and beyond. In England, 7.1 million adults struggle to read. Imagine the challenges of navigating daily life without these foundational skills - struggling to use the internet, fill out forms, or understand instructions. If you have children, helping them with their learning becomes challenging too, continuing the cycle across generations. By volunteering for just 1 hour a week with a child, you can break this cycle. Be the change in a child's life. Volunteer with Bookmark today ➡️ https://ow.ly/Fkrn50Sx0qz #BookmarkReading #EndOfStory

How important is health literacy to you? 📊 In the UK, 7.1 million adults read and write at or below the level of a nine-year-old. Shockingly, 42% of adults do not understand written health information. Just as literacy is essential for understanding written texts, health literacy is crucial for individuals to comprehend and apply health-related information effectively. Health literacy includes: 🔍 Understanding medical pamphlets and doctor's advice. 📚 Knowledge of some medical terms and health concepts. 🚶♂️ Making informed decisions about personal well-being. Limited health literacy is associated with behaviours like poor diet, smoking and lack of physical activity, leading to higher risks of morbidity and premature death. It also correlates with higher healthcare costs due to increased emergency service use and difficulties managing long-term health conditions. Research shows that individuals with limited financial and social resources are more likely to have limited health literacy. This disparity reduces opportunities for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups to actively participate in decisions about their health and care. Let's discuss: Vote below and comment your reasons! ⬇️ #BookmarkReading #EndOfStory
