You don't have to look far to catch a glimpse of this century-old aesthetic and its influence on modern-day interiors. Chrome cantilever chairs, spherical lamps, steel framed furniture… these elements can all be traced back to the short-lived, and unconventional German art and design school, the Bauhaus. We asked interior designers and experts including Nina Freudenberger, Pieter Peulen, Alexa Armstrong of Carpenters Workshop Gallery and Jordan Perry of Guest House Interiors how the iconic Bauhaus period continues to inspire their work. 

The Conference Table by Charlotte Perriand, 1947 Made from Cherry Wood and Metal, Perriand's eight-meter table was designed for architect Paul Nelson’s France-United States Memorial Hospital at Saint-Lô, Normandy – a symbol of post-war revitalisation. This special commission seated all 22 board members, and stood out with its imposing size and aerodynamic lines, reminiscent of an airplane— exemplifying Perriand's prestigious public commissions and inspiring later designs for the United Nations in Geneva. Featured in the current landmark exhibition, MONUMENTAL, exploring the theme of scale and its role in shaping our perceptions and experiences of the world around us through nine individually innovative artworks from master-level historical designers. LAMPADAIRE LAM, 2016 Forged from patinated bronze and topped with a parchment shade, this piece highlights Ingrid Donat’s penchant for conceptual alignment and detailing through its tall, slim form. Geometric patterns at the base, created using repetitive line-making and scarification techniques, further distinguish the piece—Donat's signature touch, adding her unmistakable mark.
