Schools out for summer, and we're as proud as ever of our Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme for over the break 🎉 This summer, Northumbria University has launched a schedule of free activities for hundreds of teenagers in our area, as part of the Department for Education (DfE) HAF Plus programme. A fantastic example of evidence based partnership working to support the health and wellbeing of our communities. Find out more about HAF Plus in Gateshead from Brian Kielty, our Partnership Officer and HAF Delivery Lead, in the video below or by visiting the Metrocentre Community Hub.

The Network Rail repair works on the historic High Level Bridge are nearly complete, and the whole bridge will be fully open again from Thursday 25th July. The multi-million-pound works have involved sandblasting and repainting the main beams under the bridge alongside historic metal repairs, waterproofing, drainage upgrades and resurfacing the road deck. Currently, the western path is open, while the eastern path is closed to allow contractors AmcoGiffen to remove scaffolding and hoardings. The roadway is going to be closed overnight from 11pm to 6am until Thursday 25th July to allow for resurfacing to be completed. We are pleased the High Level Bridge will be fully open again as an important cross river link for #publictransport and #activetravel especially while the #TyneBridge is being refurbished.

We're inviting residents, landlords, letting agents, and business owners to have their say on proposals for new property licensing for private rented homes in parts of Gateshead, helping to make sure they are safe, warm, and well maintained. The planned action will also aim to tackle anti-social behaviour, crime and other issues that exacerbate deprivation and inequality. The consultation is live now, and will run for three months until 7 October. https://lnkd.in/drHZET52

We’re pleased to announce a new scheme enabling children in care in Gateshead to be able to maintain important relationships with people like siblings, school friends, former foster carers or teachers. This is thanks to new funding we have received from the Department for Education, enabling us to offer the innovative Lifelong Links programme. Lifelong Links was developed by the charity Family Rights Group, working with young people, responding to the fact that children may have important relationships broken as they move into or within the care system. We had a fantastic time launching Wrekenton Family Hub earlier this week 🚀 Together with health and voluntary sector partners, our event on Wednesday aimed to promote the range of health and wellbeing services on offer at the hub. Gateshead Family Hubs now operate from nine hubs in addition to community outreach locations, and the latest family hub is the first of its kind for the Wrekenton community. Attendees included the Deputy Mayor, councillors and families, who were able to meet staff and volunteers from a range of services for every member of the family, from maternal health to youth groups and employment support. Thank you to all our partners who joined us at the event to make it such a success.

HDRC Gateshead are a team within the council who are increasing our ability to carry out and use research into factors that influence better health 🍎 We'll use the real-world data we gather to shape our services, so they're more effective at improving our residents' wellbeing. We're excited to share that one of the team's research leads has recently won a prestigious award which will enable them to launch a study into ways we can get more people across the borough walking and cycling. This is a big success and we're really looking forward to kick-starting this piece of research. This all forms part of our work to make our borough a healthier place for residents to live and somewhere everyone can thrive ☀
We are hugely proud of Dr Louis Goffe for being awarded a prestigious fellowship which will enable us to look more closely at how to get more people walking and cycling in Gateshead 🏆 Louis, our Research Lead and an Associate Researcher at Newcastle University, has been awarded an Advanced Local Authority Fellowship as part of the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) Local Authority Academic Fellowship Programme. His research will identify ways to encourage underrepresented groups in Gateshead to walk and cycle more, ultimately boosting their health 💚 🗣 Alice Wiseman, Director of Public Health at Gateshead Council and Newcastle City Council, said: "We are delighted that Louis has been awarded this prestigious fellowship, which is further evidence of the amazing work we're doing within our two Health Determinate Research Collaborations (HDRCs) in Tyneside." Huge congratulations to Louis for this exciting achievement 🌟
