With the promulgation of the constitution in 2010, devolution gave County Governments authority over important administrative duties. The goal of devolution was to put decision-making and services closer to the people, particularly historically marginalized groups. For fully devolved functions like the livestock sector, County governance is central to its development. The Livestock sector has great promise for Counties that specialize in its production if its potential is fully realized. However, the counties must devise and follow through on plans to boost the industry, assist in the growth of value chains, and eventually fully commercialize. Met today with Ms. Mary Mwiti, CEO of the Council of Governors to talk about various initiatives that could be considered for the livestock sector's development. These include livestock identification and traceability, breed improvement initiatives, animal health initiatives, Land and pasture management among others.

🔍 Exciting opportunity for East Africa's Aquaculture firms! Strong veterinary services, including diagnostic and surveillance capabilities, are crucial for a successful and competitive aquaculture industry. Fish farms need accessible and affordable diagnostic services to effectively anticipate, mitigate, and respond to disease threats. Through a new Stock Management Program, we aim to build a pool of qualified, capable veterinarians to serve East Africa’s aquaculture industry and establish and enhance local diagnostic pathways. We're excited to announce our collaboration with AquaVet Africa (www.aquavetafrica.com) and ACMS (Pty) Ltd as part of a larger technical assistance program. This initiative aims to provide veterinary and diagnostic services to participating farms, ultimately stimulating and building commercial veterinary and diagnostic capabilities for aquaculture farms across East Africa. 🔗 Interested in learning more about this opportunity? Finding sustainable solutions to the climate crisis is a pressing need. We have witnessed the devastating effects that drought and flooding can have on over 80% of Kenya's landmass, which is considered an ASAL (arid and semi-arid) area. Building a climate-smart livestock sector will reduce the sector's contribution to #GHG emissions, protecting the jobs and livelihoods of millions of producers while ensuring food and nutritional security for all. Thank you International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) for graciously hosting our team 👏🏼

The impact of climate change is being felt by all living things, including plants, animals, and humans, so finding solutions is essential and must be done so globally. I had the honor of touring the ILRI Mazingira center today. The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi founded the Mazingira Centre, an environmental research and education center. The goal of research at the Mazingira Center is to manage livestock systems' environmental impact while maintaining productivity. One of the ongoing research projects focuses on the use of anaerobic bio-digesters to address the problems caused by improper handling of human and agricultural fecal matter (manure and human waste), which contributes to high greenhouse gas emissions and causes pollution that affects public health. Bio-digesters can be used to generate gas that can be used for cooking and lighting in homes with any kind of livestock, thereby lowering the unit's fuel costs, and power expenses. Additionally, the process takes a super potent greenhouse gas — methane from cow waste — and burns it to make a less potent greenhouse gas — carbon dioxide thus reducing the contribution of the livestock unit to aggregate GHG. The biodigester slurry has a high nutritional content and can be applied as agricultural fertilizer. Finding out that bio-digesters can be used in Kenya as a substitute for traditional septic tanks was also fascinating. Despite the comparatively high initial installation costs, there is a substantial return on investment, making it a potentially beneficial addition to a livestock producing enterprise. #Soya bean, the world’s most important grain legume, shows great potential and presents a significant opportunity for East Africa. Rapid population growth and rising demand for soya-based food and animal feed are fuelling a sharp increase in demand for a range of soya-related products across the region. Strong natural growing conditions mean that East African farmers are well placed to capitalise on this, raising their incomes, creating jobs in processing, and enhancing food and nutritional security. Additionally, soya beans can enhance soil health through nitrogen fixation, thus contributing to broader agricultural resilience while simultaneously presenting a range of economic opportunities. However, regional production of soya beans remains low, and East Africa largely depends on imports to sustain its food and feed demand. Gatsby Africa recently carried out a study of the soya bean opportunity for East Africa to showcase the opportunity that exists for East African governments and farming communities operating in this subsector. The study highlights the barriers and gaps that limit the region’s soya bean productivity and profitability. It also attempts to recommend measures that the region could put in place to unlock this latent potential.
