    I’m worried I'll loose control over payroll if I work with an Umbrella company?🤔 Something we hear very frequently from #contractors, businesses and even #recruitment agencies! The umbrella company technically employs the contractor and pays contractors wages through PAYE. For contractors: 🕴️ - The umbrella company is responsible for paying you as your employer. - Some umbrella companies may choose to pay the National Minimum Wage rate for all hours worked and then make up your full rate with an additional payment, like a bonus. You must still pay tax on this additional payment and your payslip must show this and all the hours you’ve worked. - You have a right to a payslip that shows your pay. - You may also receive a ‘reconciliation statement’ from the umbrella company which shows you how your gross pay is worked out from the assignment rate.     Labour are in, are contract workers out? Labour win the UK election with a landslide victory and Keir Starmer has taken office as the new prime minister. We previously published an article, discussing the proposed changes to employer status by labour and how this could affect UK #contractworkers But what implications on businesses and the hiring process will the new government actually have?👀 👉The headline everyone’s talking about: Labour will ban zero-hour contractors and implement a “Single Worker Status”. The single worker status applies to all workers except those genuinely self-employed. 💸Businesses will have to provide more benefits to contract employees, like sick pay and holiday entitlement and all employees will be subject to #PAYE whether contract or permanent. 💸Inevitably, this makes employing #contractors more costly for businesses. Some have said this new legislation could END the UK contract market. 😨 However, some flexibility for contract workers will remain!!🙏 Labour states that contractors and freelancers will need to have a proper contract in place, detailing hours of work (no zero-hour contracts) and communication hours (right to disconnect). Therefore, the contract employee and the hiring business, still have the right to negotiate hours of work across a period of time, communication hours and length of contract. 🕺 With the unique set of skills contract workers bring to businesses and the ability to hit the ground running, contractors are, undoubtedly, still a profitable option for employers. 🪩🕺 Labour have also declared they will introduce basic rights from day one, including protection from unfair dismissal. While they will still allow for probationary periods and fair dismissals, some think this could make businesses more cautious when #hiring permanent employees. So, there will be more cost and risk associated with hiring... regardless of the contract type.     We recently published an article outlining the proposed “Single Worker Status” by the Labour party and what it could mean for #contract workers👀 (check it out on our website linked in bio) Key Takeaways Contract workers (in most cases) will fall under the Single Worker Status. The Single Worker Status by Labour will give contract workers access to more employment rights (which they aren’t currently entitled to). 🙌 However, this could also mean that contract workers currently taxed under self-employment rules will now be subject to #PAYE. 🤔 Increasing the number of individuals entitled to the minimum employment rights could have significant cost implications and impose additional administrative burdens on employers. 💸 So, what do you think?👇 #contractorsUK #graniteforyou

    Women, younger workers and those from ethnic minorities are most affected by underemployment. A new three-year study by a research team from four UK universities found. 🧐 Between September and November last year, the number of job vacancies declined by 45,000 to 949,000. Prior to that we had already begun seeing an increase in new ways of working and this has only accelerated this year. The study stated underemployment is “an increasingly concerning feature of the UK labour market”. Do we also think that women, younger workers and those from ethnic minorities are choosing alternative ways of working, for example choosing to be self-employed or freelance as opposed to a traditional 9-5? 🤔 Keen to hear our networks thoughts on this!🤝
