AI-ming High. Oxford Dynamics' robots are taking innovation to new heights. We're thrilled to share that UK start-up, Oxford Dynamics, has secured a £1 million contract with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). This contract supports the development of advanced AI robots designed to perform critical tasks in environments too hazardous for humans. Situated at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) here on campus, Oxford Dynamics is pioneering the creation of a mobile AI robot for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. This innovative robot will navigate hazardous terrains and perform semi-autonomous tasks, offering a safer alternative in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear incident scenarios. With flexible and affordable access to cutting-edge research facilities and dedicated business support at STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxford Dynamics is perfectly positioned to develop, test, and evaluate its advanced AI robot across a variety of challenging terrains. Mike Lawton, Co-founder and Director of Oxford Dynamics, shared: "This is a fantastic win for Oxford Dynamics, and an excellent opportunity to showcase our innovative robotic skills fused with the advanced AI technologies that we’re currently developing." We’re incredibly proud to support Oxford Dynamics as they advance AI and robotics to new heights. Their work is a testament to the innovative spirit and collaborative ecosystem here at Harwell Campus. The UK's leading science and innovation campus.
About us
Harwell is the UK’s leading science and innovation campus – a unique community of leading scientists, engineers and innovators working together to solve the critical problems facing our planet. Over 6,000 people work in more than 250 organisations at Harwell and these numbers will continue to grow. Our collective goal is to make Harwell the world’s largest and most important location for scientific research, technological development and commercialisation. We are finding solutions for the big challenges of the future including the impact of ageing and growing populations, climate change and sustainability, space exploration and satellite communications, energy technology and storage. We focus on accelerating science and technology breakthroughs to improve the human condition. Harwell is a crossroads where public, private, academic and commercial organisations meet and work together to address these global challenges. Start-ups, SMEs and multinationals choose to be located at Harwell where they have access to £2billion of open access research facilities (the UK's National Laboratories) and where major investment opportunities exist. Over 30 university teams from across the world are on Campus at any one time. Cross sector collaboration combined with the cross fertilisation of talent, ideas and solutions are at the core of our open, collaborative environment. The UK Government frequently selects Harwell as the location for major multi-million pound scientific infrastructure investments. The most recently announced are the Faraday Institution and Rosalind Franklin Institute. Harwell has been leading world-changing scientific breakthroughs for over 70 years and is currently managed under a private/ public partnership focused on the development of the Campus and its unique ecosystem.

Our annual summer BBQ at Harwell Campus didn't get the best weather, but that didn't stop us from having a blast! We enjoyed delicious food with a hog roast and ice cream, sipped on Aperol Spritz, and were entertained by a lively mariachi band and captivating storytelling. Despite the weather, the great company and food made it a memorable event. It just goes to show that when our community comes together, we can have fun in any climate. Although, if the sun would like to make an appearance soon, we wouldn't complain!
