About us

Laureus is a global sports-based charity that works to improve the lives of young people. The first Patron of Laureus was Nelson Mandela. At the inaugural Laureus World Sports Awards in 2000, President Mandela said: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can awaken hope where there was previously only despair.” This has become the philosophy of Laureus and the driving force behind its work. Laureus combines Laureus Sport for Good, the Laureus World Sports Academy and Ambassadors Programme and the Laureus World Sports Awards to form a unique organisation that uses the inspirational power of sport as a force for good.

“Sport has the power to change the world.”   This Mandela Day, we share with you the powerful words spoken by the first Patron of Laureus, Nelson Mandela at the inaugural Laureus World Sports Awards in 2000.   The event – and his words - marked the birth of a movement which has worked to celebrate the power of sport ever since. Today, his words resonate more than ever and Laureus Sport for Good continues to be guided by them. #SportForGood | #MandelaDay

"There’s a feeling you only get in sports - it gives me the feeling that I’m alive. I’m a refugee and far away from home, but I’m doing what I love.” The words of Mohammad Amin Alsalami, a member of the International Olympic Committee – IOC Refugee Olympic Team who will compete in the long jump at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. It is the third consecutive Olympic Games, a IOC Refugee Olympic Team will be a part of, with 37 athletes, living in 15 countries, set to compete in 12 different sports. It is the largest team yet. The first team of 10 athletes and the creation of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team prior to Rio 2016 were honoured with the Laureus Sporting Inspiration Award at the 2017 Laureus World Sports Awards, and the team continues to prove the power of sport and send a message of hope, belonging, and inclusion. #SportForGood | #Paris2024 | #RefugeeOlympicTeam

Recently, Laureus Sport for Good were the proud community partner of 'A Sport Named Solutions' event.   Over 150 attendees came together for an evening co-organised by Fondation de France Asia, Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, Asia Society Hong Kong Center and supported by Societe Generale. Laureus Sport for Good hosted a dynamic panel discussion, unpacking the synergies between sports, marketing, and community engagement. The conversation uncovered innovative ways to leverage athletics to bridge societal divides.   The evening also featured the first official Asia screening of the Cannes Film Festival selection "XXI - A Sport Named Solutions" by David Blough. A powerful documentary exploring how sport can be a catalyst for unity and inclusion.

Happy Olympic Day from all at Laureus! #LetsMove #OlympicDay

Ahead of Olympic Day this Sunday, IOC President Thomas Bach has highlighted the importance of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 in inspiring the world to move and invited the world to join the IOC’s “Let’s Move” campaign: “Athletes from all corners of the world and backgrounds are getting ready to participate in the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The athletes will inspire and encourage people everywhere to bring more movement to their lives, making it healthier, better and more joyful. We are very thankful that we could partner up with the World Health Organization again for this very important campaign.” As part of the "Let’s Move and Celebrate" campaign, show your support for athletes at the Games by creating, or recreating, their own iconic celebration moves, and share these online with @Olympics and #LetsMove.
