Today, we celebrate 70 years of the Food for Peace Program. Since 1954, this program has made it possible for USAID to respond to global crises thanks to food grown here in the United States, as well as the farmers, grain elevator operators, truckers, bargemen, freight forwarders, and port operators who grow that food and help transport it to the world’s most vulnerable. On average, over the last decade, this support has come from American farmers in more than 21 U.S. states. Food for Peace, which was one of the first permanent, peacetime foreign aid programs, remains to this day a cornerstone of our lifesaving work overseas. 🎙️Yesterday, we had the privilege of attending an engaging live podcast featuring Ambassador Mark Green, former USAID Administrator and current CEO and President of The Wilson Center. The session offered valuable insights and reflections, which were both informative and inspiring, reinforcing the critical impact of strategic development efforts. The U.S has announced more than $57 million in additional humanitarian assistance to address the urgent needs of hundreds of thousands of crisis-affected people in South Sudan 🇸🇸. This crucial support, announced by U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan Michael J. A. in Juba, includes nearly $55 million through USAID and $2.4 million through the U.S. Department of State. #South #Sudan continues to face significant humanitarian challenges due to insecurity and climatic shocks, such as seasonal flooding, which have led to extensive needs across the country. According to the United Nations an estimated nine million people—73 percent of the population—will require humanitarian assistance in 2024. Additionally, over seven million people will need food assistance during the lean season from April to July, and 1.6 million children under five are at risk of acute malnutrition. The ongoing crisis in neighboring Sudan has also forced over 700,000 people, primarily South Sudanese, to flee violence and return to South Sudan since April 2023. With this new funding, USAID, United Nations, and NGO partners will provide essential services such as multi-purpose market-based assistance, health care, nutrition support, protection, shelter items, and water, sanitation, and hygiene services to the most vulnerable South Sudanese and returnees from Sudan. #HumanitarianAid #SouthSudan #USAID #USStateDepartment #GlobalAid #HumanitarianResponse
