The sun might not have been shining, but the high vis was! 🦺 Last week, we welcomed the Project Monitoring Officer on behalf of Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to the site of our second UK DAC deployment for an update on activities. This Norfolk-based project represents another first-of-a-kind deployment for our team and is only possible due to catalytic funding from the UK government to accelerate greenhouse gas removal solutions. We’ll keep you posted as this project rapidly takes shape on the ground. Learn more here 👉 https://bit.ly/3zJmXSG #directaircapture #climatetech #engineering #climateaction #netzero

Last week, we celebrated our fourth birthday at our inaugural ‘Hot Christmas’ event. 🔥 Naturally, it involved building things in the comfort of a London railway arch — but also great food, a DJ set from a family friend, and cacti. From our three co-founders, Nicholas, Shiladitya, and Gaël, to a dedicated team of over thirty compassionate and brilliant people, it’s humbling to take stock of the amazing community we’ve grown around our mission to reinvent carbon for good. Today, we have three first-of-a-kind DAC plants taking shape on the ground and a pipeline of planet-changing plans in the works. We can’t wait for what the next four years hold. A special mention to some very spiky new team members, who are settling into their new homes — MZT-stamped mugs lovingly hand made by one of our engineer’s mums. 🌵

Yesterday, I read an article that made me do a double take. This piece from Kenza Bryan in the Financial Times was a clear, well-written overview of carbon capture and carbon removal, in what’s probably 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥’𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭-𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘯𝘦𝘸𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳. 📰 Proof, if it were needed, that carbon capture and carbon removal really has transitioned from a niche interest you’d only read about in scientific journals or sustainability titles... to a technology category with global economic and business impact. 🌍 This balanced and objective overview is a useful reminder for players like Mission Zero Technologies that we can’t seize the opportunities in front of us, if we don’t pay attention to the challenges that exist too. 🏔️ Listening to Bill Gates last month at #BESummit24, he framed it perfectly when he talked about the decade in front of us: - This next decade needs to see promising tech translate into tangible products with real-life impacts. 📈 - As importantly though, it needs to be the decade where 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐮𝐬. 🫱🏽🫲🏽 - We need to be honest enough to talk about more than just the positives. We have to share the challenges that remain and what it’s going to take to progress past them. 🛣️ So, a decade from now my hope is that any ‘where are we now?’ piece from the FT on carbon capture and carbon removal celebrates: 1- the work of projects like the NEGEM Project that proscribed how businesses can be incentivised to put carbon removal at the heart of meaningful decarbonisation strategies, restoring the negative externality of Scopes 1-3 emissions to their rightful place for accounting and action. 2- the brave funding policies and mechanisms that bridged the FOAK>commercial rollout gap, so startups offering the quality, financially viable climate solutions we needed could develop into the global successes industry and society needed. ...among many other possible visions of success! There’s plenty more to say here, but I’m keen to hear from *you* - are there more questions that you have about carbon capture and carbon removal technologies today? Do comment or DM me, I'd be happy to chat. Let's all leave our Linkedin procrastination breaks a little more well-informed 💡

On the cusp of Mission Zero Technologies' 4th birthday, last week was something different for me. 🎂 It was the first time I've had the luxury to step away from the office in 2024, be away from my team (the FOMO) and catch up with the amazing community working to secure the planet's future 🌍 Being heads-down on work can take a lot out of you, so taking strength from others was a welcome chance to refresh. For us, receiving investment and support from Breakthrough Energy 3 years ago was unreal back when it happened - and now #BESummit2024 led by Bill Gates himself, in the flesh, took shape in our backyard in London for #LCAW2024! Reconnecting with the amazing global team at Breakthrough, and all the ecosystem players who've been past and present champions for Mission Zero was reinvigorating - it helps to take stock of just how far we've come, and all the support we've received. This even included a reunion with childhood friend-now-policy ally Nicolette Tan, driving progress back in Singapore 🫱🏽🫲🏽 This was capped off by a weekend in Munich at the Deutsches Museum, speaking to a planetarium full of tech enthusiasts (how often does one get to type that?), at the invitation of Larissa Skarke and World Fund and alongside the immensely experienced Carlos Haertel who has seen and done it all before in DAC once already. 🙇🏼♂️ Any chance to inspire belief in those learning about climate tech for the first time is a chance worth taking, and I was grateful to have their ears leading into the weekend, even doing a merch swap afterwards with Niklas Oettle! Now I'm back in seat, and I'm ready for the next 4 years. Mission Zero Technologies is ready for the next 4 years. And I hope you'll continue to support us for the next 4 years! 🙏🏼

We’ve just about cooled down from a week catching up with good friends, celebrating London Climate Action Week, and exchanging notes with the world’s top climate innovators at #BESummit24 — which coincidentally took place during a UK heatwave. It was a privilege to be part of so many inspiring chats, and a grounding reminder of the very real collective effort going into accelerating meaningful climate solutions. Our top highlights include: Heartening words from Bill Gates: - Breakthrough Energy was founded to do whatever is necessary to bring about the green industrial revolution, paving a clear path for ideas to grow in the #climatetech industry. - ”We subscribe to deep realism” — a reminder that climate solutions have to fit into the industrial picture that exists today (and will keep existing tomorrow). - The next ten years are about scaling globally where we can make the biggest impact — not just in wealthy countries. - To achieve all of this we need to ”have a clear voice”, bringing others with us rather than pushing them away. Conversations from our ecosystem: - Talking with those who supported us early on in our journey, we reflected on how the strides we’ve already taken together are serving the next wave of climate pioneers. - Taking time to celebrate the success of friends and fellow leaders in the carbon revolution, sharing lessons learned and how they translate to mutual growth. - Putting our ear to the ground to learn how we can shape our direct air capture technology to deliver maximum positive climate impact. Thank you to everyone who made our week — including our incredible investors and partners, and the whole team at Breakthrough for putting on such a valuable gathering. Mark Hartney, Allegra Kowalewski-Ferreira, Olivia Oo, Yvonne Tee, Jonathan Eckart, Mario Fernandez, Sandra Chavez, Deep Sky, Phil De Luna, Deep Science Ventures, Adam Tomassi-Russell, 2150 👏

  • Yesterday we caught up with our partners at Breakthrough Energy at our East London labs ahead of #BESummit24 — an event uniting the world’s foremost minds in climate tech innovation, policy, and business. Thank you Mark Hartney, Kate Mikesell, Jack Andreasen, and Shahaley Carr Bornstein for taking time out of your busy schedules to see our direct air capture technology in action. Working alongside such positive people pouring everything into delivering Net Zero doesn’t get old! 🌎 #directaircapture #climatetech #carbonremoval #netzero #engineering #electrochemistry #hardwareinnovation #LCAW2024 #climateaction

  • Down at our East London labs, Oran’s got his hands on something very exciting… Every day our R&D team removes atmospheric CO₂ while refining the various parts of our technology. Instead of venting it back into the atmosphere, we collect this CO₂ to be analysed. Last month, our test stand’s CO₂ capture rate increased by ten times — moving us from filling two of the bags Oran’s holding per day, to filling one per hour! 🫧 Learn more about how our technology is using nature’s blueprint to remove CO₂ in the heart of London and beyond ➡️ https://bit.ly/3XynwJ1
