Tips for your social initiative from Jaime Brown, winner of our Practice Pitch Competition for the Action Accelerator Programme 23/24 🏆 Jaime started an interactive, self-paced Deaf Culture and Sign Languages training programme at her workplace, Concentrix. Through the Action Accelerator Programme, she got the tools and knowledge to launch the program amongst all 270k Concentrix staff worldwide. She was also inspired to set up her own charity and host training programmes outside of Concentrix. The Action Accelerator Programme is designed to help One Young World Ambassadors from the 2023 Belfast Summit take their ideas from inspiration to impact. It supports Delegates from the Summit in their effort to launch and scale sustainability initiatives. The judges for the competition were Ella Robertson McKay, Safoora Biglari,  Mary Helda Akongo, Robbie Dale, and Isabel Menéndez. One Young World ASEAN Forum 2024 in Kuala Lumpur Over 350 young change-makers from over 20 countries gathered virtually and in person at Menara Maybank in Kuala Lumpur to take action on the SDGs 🇲🇾 The Forum inspired action by platforming young changemakers on how they are transforming their communities across four key themes. Here’s some food for thought on each one: Health Equity 🧘♀️ “Many of us live with intergenerational trauma, with parents who have had their own sufferings. The change starts with us, having conversations and creating safe spaces for people to share their stories. Mental health is just as important as any other health and to meaningfully engage with different advocacies, we need to design a system to input our voices at decision-making spaces.” Diversity, Equity and Inclusion 🫱🏼🫲🏽 “Being an agent for change can transform our own narrative and influence others. With a better understanding of ourselves, we can form better ideas and strategise how to navigate different ideologies to make an impact and change the status quo.” The Climate Crisis 🌳 “Dealing with the climate crisis gives us opportunities to create new jobs that were not previously available in previous generations. The work we do now will support both ourselves and our future generations and we must ensure we create strong ecosystems to support our impact better.” Artificial Intelligence 🤖 “While AI may create redundancies for jobs, it does not diminish the importance of our innate human curiosities nor diminish the purpose of education. What does it take to create a more inclusive workplace? Diversity and inclusion are not just necessary for creativity and social justice, research has shown that a more diverse workforce is 35% more likely to have greater financial returns. Our Ambassador Eva Rodrigo is an analytical scientist at AstraZeneca and believes that everyone can and should be an advocate for inclusivity in their capacity. Hurricane Beryl is devastating islands like Carriacou in Grenada in the Caribbean Sea, damaging infrastructure and leaving many areas without electricity. The World Health Organisation reports that 1,032 people required evacuation in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, 2,500 in Grenada, and 129 in Trinidad and Tobago. We are witnessing the very real and escalating consequences of the climate emergency and the time to act is now. Our Ambassador is making tech more accessible and diverse, here’s how 👇 Nilufar Murodova has dedicated the past seven years to ensuring equal access to education and addressing structural inequalities through education and lifelong learning, particularly in Tajikistan. As the Director of American Space Dushanbe, a US State Department program, she has impacted over 200,000 Tajik and Afghan youth and professionals, addressing the skill gaps hindering their career development. Nilufar’s work extends beyond nationwide programs, with daily offerings and a Makerspace Lab that supports local startups. She equips Tajik youth with essential skills and opportunities to thrive in their careers through these efforts. Through her initiatives like NASA's Space Apps, IT-gap platform, iCode, and vocational training for Afghan refugees, she has fostered connectivity and empowered youth in technology while promoting gender equality in the IT industry. Indigenous Insights Can Save the Amazon! Our Ambassador Daniel Gutiérrez Patiño is the Founder and Chief Executive Director of Saving The Amazon, a non-profit organisation amplifying Indigenous communities in Colombia and planting trees to combat deforestation in the country’s Amazon region. The organisation acknowledges that Indigenous communities are the guardians of the Amazon, and they partner with them to preserve and enrich the rainforest. The Indigenous communities retain complete ownership of planted trees and have input on which trees are best for the region based on their knowledge and heritage. Saving the Amazon also uses geospatial technology to determine individual tree locations for greater accountability, which creates a meaningful experience for donors, because they learn about the Indigenous stories, traditions and knowledge through the trees.  Learn more about his work here: https://bit.ly/4bw5Z7E
