Polytechnic is a graphic design studio supporting research-, community- and cultural projects.

About us

Polytechnic is a collaborative graphic design studio working with researchers, community projects, and the cultural sector. The multidisciplinary practice is led by Georgia Cherry (RCA) and Arthur Carey (LCC, Leeds College of Art), whose distinct but complementary backgrounds in arts and humanities inform their critically-engaged approach. We create enduring work founded in typographic detail and exploration, and visually our projects often share traces of manual/analogue design processes. Wider research interests include design for social use, site-oriented work and material innovation.

A detail of a sample letter 'N' for the signage of the flagship Natalino store at 46 Mortimer Street, London. The letters were laser cut from orbital-sanded 3mm aluminium sheet and then bonded direct to the storefront glass. This image shows an early test, cut from a smooth sheet which we then sanded in the studio. It was initially routed rather than lasercut resulting in a slightly rounded 'square' inside corner, rather than the clean 90-degree angle intended. We hand-finished this sample to achieve the sharp corner (as aluminium is fairly soft to work with), but ultimately had the letters lasercut to ensure the accuracy of the finish. As part of the Natalino rebrand we developed custom brand display lettering and body typefaces. We took every opportunity to find ways the 2D brand identity could translate into various touchpoints across the physical space. A wonderful collaboration with Mooradian Studio and Mitre & Mondays.

Custom lettering as part of our work for Almari, a new community cafe/kitchen in Aberfeldy (E14) set-up by the incredible duo Maryam and Assan. The word mark is shown here on a glass-painted sample. Wider signage production used a combination of silkscreen and traditional brush signpainting to achieve the required detailing across various applications. We are so happy that Maryam and Assan have now opened their doors to the public – call in for a karak chai and elaichi bun if you're in the area.

On press with Maria Amidu and Hollie Douglas: 'in the perpetual back and forth' for Towner Eastbourne and Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts). The third and final 'Future Collect' commission presents a new paper and text-based installation and accompanying sound piece by Maria Amidu. Exploring the dialogue between paper and writing, the exhibition provokes questions about how we relate and respond to a fragile artwork in a public gallery through a gesture of tenderness and collective care. Exhibition opens 4 May.

New work: Visual identity and website presenting Esther Breithoff's research on the archaeology and heritage of modern conflict. Spanning the fields of Contemporary Archaeology, Critical Heritage Studies and Environmental Humanities, Breithoff's work traces a common set of interests in the relationships between conflicts, resources and rights across more-than-human worlds in the Anthropocene. Breithoff is a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Archeology and Heritage in the Department of History, Classics and Archeology at Birkbeck University of London. Print work and website from a community-led initiative we've been supporting this year. 'More Pembury, Less Circus' is a local campaign to improve the five-way Pembury Circus junction in Hackney, and connect a community physically divided by the hostile environment. One of the most dangerous and inaccessible junctions in Hackney, Pembury Circus is in the 99th percentile for the worst pollution in the country with air quality in breach of 3 WHO recommendations. Since launching, the petition has achieved almost 600 signatures and last week the council announced plans for the Hackney Central and Pembury Circus Green Corridor – 'the biggest public realm investment in hackney's history'. The visual identity places positivity at its heart with a cheery five-limbed emblem that represents each of the five arms of the junction. Its form is designed to be highly recognisable at a distance to promote the campaign and encourage a sense of collectivity and connection as supporters display posters in residential windows and local businesses. Bright colours are used to enhance the campaign's visibility around the dark junction, with new colours appearing with each wave of flying due to an arrangement with a printer to produce paintwork on their assorted waste material. The project uses Peter Wiefgel's (CatFonts) version of the little known extended style (breitschrift) of typeface Din 1451, whose forms are distinctly honest and highly functional. These extended letterforms first appeared as p[art of the Prussian railway branding in the early 1900s and are still present on some road and rail signage in Germany. To support much needed local accessibility and inclusivity in the campaign, we added Turkish language support to the font and paired it with Yevgeniy Anfalov's unreleased typeface KTF 2101. The community campaign will continue to gather signatures in support of its aims to ensure the council's plans address local needs and concerns. Please sign and share if you support their objectives: www.action-for-pembury.org
