Today marks a historic day for Ponterra and a gigantic leap forward in the race to restore our natural ecosystems. Ponterra, Microsoft, Carbon Streaming Corporation and Rubicon Carbon have partnered in one of the largest nature-based carbon removal deals to date. The Azuero Reforestation Project will restore 10,000 hectares of degraded agricultural land on the Azuero Peninsula in Panama by planting over six million trees from more then 75 native tree species. The project will enable over 100 local landholders to participate in and earn an income from the reforestation activities through long-term annual payments and a share of carbon credit sales while generating more than 300 jobs in the local community. It highlights the fact that Ponterra leases land rather than purchasing it outright, our high due diligence standards and the incredible community benefits that the reforestation activities create in the region. One reason for developers to take this issue seriously, Thiago Picolo said, was pressure from removals-based carbon credit buyers such as Microsoft, which have made it clear that they are willing to buy only from projects with strong social as well as environmental profiles."
