As we know, open data empowers consumers and challenges traditional financial services providers - and few are more traditional than wealth. But 8 years on from the UK’s ground-breaking approach to open banking, lessons have been learnt and a way forward is becoming clearer. Our Open Futurist, Marie Walker, shares her thoughts on the announcement of the Digital Information and Smart Data Bill in today’s King’s Speech: “The introduction of the Digital Information and Smart Data Bill marks a significant step towards leveraging data for economic growth and enhancing public services. By establishing Digital Verification Services and the National Underground Asset Register, the Bill fosters innovation and efficiency, crucial for a modern digital government. “It is great to see the new government recognising the importance and potential of data-sharing ecosystems with the Bill. The implementation of Smart Data schemes is particularly promising, empowering consumers to securely share their data with authorised third-party providers, thereby fostering innovation and informed decision-making. Secure, consented data sharing may have started in financial services, but shouldn’t end there. The necessary capabilities, expertise and motivation exist in the UK and it’s time to bring it to fruition. “Moreover, the Bill's focus on improving data laws to support scientific research while ensuring robust data protection is commendable. Strengthening the regulator’s (the ICO) powers and modernising its structure will provide the necessary oversight and confidence in data handling practices. This comprehensive approach not only promotes technological advancements but also ensures that data security and privacy are at the forefront. “This Bill aligns with Raidiam’s vision of creating a secure, efficient and innovative digital landscape. It is forward-thinking and promises to unlock the potential of data for the benefit of the UK.
