We welcome the UK Government’s recognition of the key role that Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) can play in decarbonising air travel and their plans to support domestic production, announced in the #KingsSpeech. We believe that SAF, coupled with actions to further increase the fuel efficiency of aircraft and aero engines, represents the fastest, most cost-effective way to meet the aviation industry’s net zero ambitions. Aero-engines can already fly commercially on a 50% SAF blend. But Rolls-Royce has gone even further. We have successfully completed compatibility testing of all our in-production civil aero engine types on 100% SAF. https://ow.ly/alK150SEzjX Last year, we were also very pleased to collaborate with Virgin Atlantic on Flight100, the airline’s historic flight from London Heathrow to New York JFK on 100% SAF, using a Boeing 787 with our Trent 1000 engines. That flight demonstrated the capability of SAF as a safe drop-in replacement for fossil-derived jet fuel, compatible with today’s engines, airframes and fuel infrastructure. https://ow.ly/CEUc50SEzjV A domestic SAF production capability would not only boost the UK economy and help airlines meet their sustainability targets, it would also help to provide operational and energy security for the country’s aerial defence capabilities. We have already proved the applicability of SAF for defence applications. Working in partnership with the RAF, DE&S, Airbus and AirTanker, our Trent 700 engines helped the Royal Air Force (RAF) fly an RAF Voyager on 100% SAF over a year ago – a world-first for a military aircraft of its size. https://ow.ly/Lm1R50SEzjU The RAF has subsequently used sustainable aviation fuel, blended with regular jet fuel, to achieve the first sustainable aviation fuel blend air-to-air refuelling of a Typhoon and C-130 Hercules aircraft – both of which are powered by our engines. https://ow.ly/tVko50SEzjW We look forward to engaging with the UK Government to realise our joint ambition of making aviation more sustainable.

The Trent engine family is the most successful engine family EVER! And now we are investing £1bn in a programme of upgrades to make the best better. The programme will deliver further durability enhancements to the Trent 7000, Trent 1000, Trent XWB-84 and Trent XWB-97. For the Trent 1000, we’re in the final stages of certifying a Durability Enhancement package that will more than DOUBLE engine time on wing. And we aren’t stopping there, a second package of hot-section upgrades will deliver a further time on wing boost of up to 30%. It’s time for the next chapter. Our mtu propulsion engines and marine gensets will power three multipurpose frigates for the Polish Navy.
