After a “difficult” fourth round of negotiations in Bremen late last week, ZDS submitted its final offer to ver.di members, comprising two contract variants with different durations. The cascading of smaller box ships to more-lucrative long-haul lanes has created a shortage of vessels for intra-Asia trades.  “As the number of ships being deployed on ocean-going routes increases, concerns are being raised about a shortage of ships on some routes within Asia. The forwarding industry has questioned IATA’s decision to require ‘potentially ruinous’ financial securities for some companies wishing to use CASS, its settlement system, as exclusively revealed by Alex Lennane yesterday. New offices, new company names, or new locations – even for established forwarders – could result in the need to give International Air Transport Association (IATA) 20% of air cargo sales turnover in deposits, or expensive bank guarantees. International Air Transport Association (IATA) is causing “severe financial strain” for start-up and SME forwarders that could propel them out of business. “We are a small company. For us, these are big sums of money. We could have put this money in development, in opening new stations, or put it in the bank to make interest. Now it’s simply sitting there, doing nothing. It’s a very frustrating situation.” Neutral Air Partner's Christos Spyrou said: “This is a major concern for SME cargo agents, and we’re receiving complaints from numerous members. An electronics shipper has set up a platform for its B2B network that allows customers and traders to track supply, buy excess inventory and book logistics and distribution – all without a ‘middleman’. Houston-based Smith & Associates, the 11th-largest global distributor of electronic components and semiconductors, has an online platform that allows verified customers to trade products, with the associated logistics being managed by the shipper....
