About us
The Workboat Association is the trade, skills and safety standards association for the workboat industry. Since its inception in 1994, the association has acted as a crucial point of liaison between its membership and key regulatory and industry bodies, such as the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and international Port States. It has also driven the creation of safety, technical and best practice standards, provided a unifying platform for industry lobbying and debate, and delivered industry-recognised training and certification opportunities. Core achievements include the introduction and subsequent revision of the MCA Code of Practice for the Safe Operation of Small Workboats – the “Workboat Code” and, the formation and development of the multi-national Maritime Apprenticeship Schemes - with syllabuses in process covering all duties on board commercial vessels under 500GT. The Workboat Association has a membership base of close to 200 UK and European workboat owners, operators, stakeholders and professionals, collectively representing around 1000 operational vessels and approximately 6000 direct personnel. Supporting you to start your first day within the industry, to operating a successful global fleet of vessels.

In line with The Workboat Association's 2024 Safety Campaign "Masters Responsibility" the Maritime and Coastguard Agency have released the following press release regarding the recent conviction of a Master:
A skipper of a fishing vessel has received a suspended sentence after a collision left two people with injuries. Investigator Martin Hayward said: "This was a dangerous situation caused by the master of the fishing vessel failing to adhere to the collision avoidance rules, which could have had disastrous consequences were it not for the quick thinking of those on the vessel in danger." Thank you to everyone who attended our 150th Anniversary Dinner at The Box, Plymouth on Friday evening. With welcome drinks provided by Plymouth Gin, a rousing call to dinner by the Royal Marine drummers and the city's town crier, John Pitt keeping us all to time; and with past and present team members, Commissioners and industry friends and colleagues in attendance the evening was the perfect way to mark our anniversary - 150 years after being constituted within The Pier and Harbour Orders Confirmation Act, 1874, cited as ‘The Cattewater Harbour Order, 1874’. Special thanks must go to Richard Ballantyne OBE who was our after-dinner speaker and Matthew Morris FRICS FAAV who not only presented team member Emma Maunder with The Workboat Association's John Percival Memorial Award for Best Industry Trainee but also read out a message from HRH The Prince of Wales, congratulating us on our 150 years. #CHC150 #Cattewater #Plymouth #150years #maritime

We congratulate Labour MP Mike Kane on his appointment as the new maritime minister and look forward to working with him soon. Our CEO, Rhett Hatcher, on his appointment, reacted by saying: “I congratulate Mike Kane on his appointment as maritime minister. “Having shadowed the #maritime brief for most of the last Parliament he brings a wealth of knowledge to the role and is ably placed to hit the ground running. I look forward to working together to help ensure #shipping continues to be at the heart of UK prosperity. “There is much to be done across government for the shipping sector. The early focus should be on a long-term #decarbonisation plan, ensuring our approach to maritime borders helps, rather than hinders, #trade and working with the sector to deliver the workforce we need now and in the future.” To read more, click the link 👇 https://lnkd.in/d7sSfv52 #labourgovernment #shippingindustry
